Some vendors still report a "Grok rank", usually meaning the order in which brands appear inside one answer. Treat that as one run's layout, not a stable ranking, unless the tool shows you the repeated runs behind it. That is a different question from where your brand appears in Grok's answers, and this page does not cover it. ## What makes Grok harder to measure than other engines Three facts shape any Grok measurement plan. **Grok reads X as well as the web.** xAI says consumer Grok can search public X posts and the web in real time. Developers reach it through the xAI API. xAI documents web and X search tools for the API, but API answers are not a copy of what a person sees in the app. xAI's legal pages describe logged-out use only in some regions, so what you can test without an account depends on where you are. **Automating the consumer app is not allowed.** xAI's acceptable use policy prohibits using bots to access the service and accessing it "through unauthorized automated or non-human means, whether through a bot, script, or otherwise." The honest routes are a person using the app, or the official API. Ask any vendor which of those it uses. ## How we compared Grok tracking routes Our method, so you can repeat it: 1. We listed the capabilities a buyer needs, taken from the job of tracking brand presence: repeatable prompts, full-answer retention, brand, citation and recommendation tracking, source evidence, competitor views, historical comparison, exports, a free option, and a clear price basis. 2. We rated each route on what it can show you, not on what a vendor claims it delivers. Ratings are words, not scores: **strong** (the route does this by design), **partial** (possible with extra work or with a known gap), **none** (the route cannot do it), **verify** (depends on the product; check before buying). 3. We read xAI's own documentation, pricing and policies, and the public pricing or feature pages of vendors that mention Grok, all on 24 September 2026. 4. We did not trial any paid vendor product, and we did not rank vendors. A person can tell a recommendation from a passing mention better than most rules can. They rate partial on repeatability because answers vary between runs, the app offers several modes, and sources may not appear on every answer. Open a fresh chat for every question and write down the mode you used. - **One-shot checkers** mostly show "verify" because each product displays something different. Some show the full answer, others show a summary score. They are built for a single reading, so they keep no history of their own. - **The xAI API** rates strong on repeatability and retention because you control the exact input, the model name and the tools, and you can store the whole response. It rates partial on website cited: xAI's citations documentation says the default citations list contains all sources encountered, which need not all be referenced in the final answer. Ask which one your plan collects. - **Rankscale:** the pricing page lists Grok among included engines; we could not confirm a free trial from the page text. We read the Beamtrace, Cairrot, Dageno and LLM Pulse pages later the same day, after the Google results described in the methodology became available. We also checked the Profound and Otterly.AI pricing pages. Neither named Grok in the text we could read. That does not prove either lacks Grok coverage elsewhere. ## Is there a best free Grok rank tracker? For a single reading or a small monthly log, free can be enough. For scheduled tracking, check what a vendor's free plan actually includes before you rely on it. - **A free Grok account by hand.** Keep ten to twenty questions in a spreadsheet, ask each in a fresh chat once a month, and paste the full answer. This is the most reliable free method because you see exactly what a person sees. - **Free one-shot checkers and free plans.** Some vendors advertise a free start. Verify signup, Grok coverage, history, scheduling and exports on the current plan. A free reading is useful to see whether you appear at all. Before trusting one, ask whether it queries Grok itself, through the app or the API, or approximates Grok with another model. - **Free trials of paid platforms.** A trial of a few days lets you run your real question set once. It will not show a trend, because a trend needs several dated runs. The low-cost paid route is the xAI API. To turn the sheet into numbers, use one formula for each observation: > Rate = answers showing the observation ÷ usable answers in the run **Illustrative example:** 15 questions × 3 runs gives 45 answers. If 42 are usable, your brand is named in 14, your website is cited in 5 and you are explicitly recommended in 3, then your brand-named rate is 14 ÷ 42 = 33%, your website-cited rate is 12% and your recommendation rate is 7%. Those are observations from one set of runs. They do not prove why Grok answered that way, and next month's change is only comparable if the questions and conditions match. ## Questions to ask any Grok tracking vendor Match each question to the criteria above: 1. **Collection:** Do you collect from the consumer Grok app, the xAI API, or both? If the app, how does that comply with xAI's policy on automated access? 2. **Repeatable prompts:** Can I freeze a versioned question set and see when it changed? 3. **Full answers:** Will I see the full saved answer text for every run, or only a score? 4. **Separate observations:** Do you report brand named, website cited and explicit recommendation separately? 5. **Sources:** Do you list every source link, including X posts, and show whether the answer text actually used each one? 6. **Competitors:** Can I choose the competitors and see them in the same answers? 7. **History:** How long do you keep runs, and do you warn me when two runs are not comparable? 8. **Exports:** Can I export raw answers and links as CSV, not only a PDF summary? 9. **Price basis:** Is Grok included on the plan I am buying, and how are prompts, runs and engines counted? While we drafted this article, Google returned a verification page for the exact question, so at that stage we could not read the Google results, AI Overview or People Also Ask. As a secondary check, the first five relevant DuckDuckGo results were articles from AIclicks, EWR Digital, AI Rank Checker, LLM Monitor and GEO Toolbox. Most explained that Grok has no stable rank, and several named vendors and plans, but none published the repeated Grok answers behind its choices, and most were written by companies selling a tracker. A logged-out ChatGPT session answered the exact question and the free-tool variant with vendor shortlists and noted that Grok has no Google-style position; we read both answers on screen and cite neither as evidence. Gemini 2.5 Flash with Google Search grounding, an API check rather than the consumer app, returned similar vendor lists. Grok's website asked us to confirm a pre-filled question before sending it, which we could not do, so we obtained no Grok answer. After the article was drafted, at 22:47 UTC on 24 September 2026, the Google results page for the exact question became readable through our workstation browser. Excluding ads, the first five organic results were AIclicks' "5 Best Grok Rank Tracker Tools for 2026", EWR Digital's "Best Grok Rank Trackers in 2026", Beamtrace's Grok rank tracker product page, LLM Pulse's "Best Grok AI Tracking Tools in 2026" and Dageno's "Best Online Grok Rank Tracker Tools". We read all five. Four are ranked lists and one is a product page. The lists from AIclicks, LLM Pulse and Dageno each put the publisher's own product first; EWR Digital's author runs an agency and ranks Cairrot first from experience with agency clients. None publishes a test method with the repeated Grok answers behind its order, and none says whether its Grok data comes from the consumer app or the xAI API. AIclicks and Dageno both say Grok does not rank pages the way a search engine does, which matches this page. People Also Ask showed four questions: which AI-powered rank tracker is the best, what the best rank tracker tool is, where Grok is ranked in AI, and what the best paid rank checker tools are. The AI Overview recommended Cairrot and Beamtrace, citing Cairrot and EWR Digital; we treat that as an observed answer, not as evidence about either product. We then read the Beamtrace, Cairrot, Dageno and LLM Pulse pages and added them to the vendor readings above. The Google results did not change the route ratings.
