# How to Get Cited in ChatGPT Answers With Earned Media

To get cited in ChatGPT answers with earned media, first read which sites ChatGPT already links for your buyer questions, then earn accurate coverage on the ones a publication or editor will actually write for. Re-ask the same questions later and compare the saved answers. Nobody outside OpenAI can promise a citation, and OpenAI does not publish how an answer weighted its sources, so treat coverage as a way to become eligible and measure what changes.

This guide covers earned media, meaning coverage you do not control: articles, reviews, roundups, interviews and expert quotes on other people's sites. It does not cover your own pages, which are a separate job. [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) records answers and links but does not place coverage for you.

## How to get cited in ChatGPT answers: the short version

1. **Start from the answer.** Ask ChatGPT your buyer questions and save the sources it links. Those sites are the ones this answer used on that day.
2. **Pitch the sources, not the engine.** An editor cannot write for ChatGPT, but can write about a useful fact, dataset or expert view.
3. **Give a reason to cite you.** Coverage that names your brand next to a specific claim is easier to quote than a bare logo in a list.
4. **Keep your own site open to search.** OpenAI documents a crawler, OAI-SearchBot, for ChatGPT search features, so check that robots.txt does not block it.
5. **Measure five things separately.** A mention, a citation, a recommendation, a referral and a conversion are different events.

## Why does earned media matter for ChatGPT citations?

OpenAI says ChatGPT can search the web and show linked sources with an answer. When it does, the sources are pages from other sites, and many of them are articles, reviews and comparisons rather than a brand's own pages. A brand that appears on those pages can be named in the answer even when its own site is not linked.

What is not known is how much weight any one source gets. OpenAI does not publish that, and answers produced without a web search show no sources at all. So this article makes one claim: earned coverage is a sensible place to work because it is where linked sources often come from, and you can check whether it moved anything in your own saved answers.

## Which sites should you earn coverage on?

Do not guess from a list of famous publications. Build the list from the answers.

1. Write ten buyer questions in the words a customer would use, such as "which pet food is covered by the commissary savings program" (invented example).
2. Ask each one in ChatGPT with web search on, in a temporary unpersonalised chat, and save the full answer.
3. Copy every linked source into a sheet with its site, page type and whether it named your brand.
4. Sort the sources by page type and by how often the same site appears.

A small version of the sheet looks like this. The rows are an invented example, not results from a real run.

| Source type | What the page does | Earned media move |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Roundup or "best of" article | Names several brands for one need | Pitch a fact the editor can add or correct |
| Review or comparison | Compares two or three products | Offer a review sample or a clear spec sheet |
| Expert explainer | Quotes people on a topic | Offer a named expert with a specific, checkable view |
| Forum or community thread | Collects user experience | Take part openly under your own name, without scripting posts |
| Official or reference page | States a rule or definition | Make sure the facts they hold about you are right |

This is professional judgement, not a ranking of source types. ChatGPT may link different pages for the same question on a different day, so one run proves nothing. Repeat it, as in the guide to [monitoring brand mentions in ChatGPT](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/monitoring-brand-mentions-in-chatgpt).

## What should you pitch to earn a citation?

Editors accept pitches that help their readers, and ChatGPT can only link what exists. Four kinds of material tend to hold up:

- **A specific fact.** A number you can document, with the method, such as the share of your support tickets about one question.
- **A named expert.** A person who can answer one narrow question in plain words.
- **A correction.** If a roundup states your price or feature wrongly, send the editor the source page.
- **A useful asset.** A checklist, template or dataset that an article can link to.

Avoid paid placements that hide the payment. A page that does not disclose a sponsorship can harm the reader's trust, and it gives you nothing you can defend. Google's [SEO Starter Guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide) says helpful, reliable content written for people is the base of search performance, and the same logic applies to the coverage you try to earn.

## A worked example of reading the sources

Military Pet Club is a public site in another field, so it works as an illustration only. It is not a Prime client and this is not an endorsement or a claim about any AI result. Its [homepage](https://militarypetclub.com/) describes monthly savings on pet food at the commissary and a "PCS with pets" section, and its [dogs page](https://militarypetclub.com/dogs) carries the same Purina Pro Plan programme.

For a site like this, a buyer question might be "how do military families save on pet food at the commissary" (invented). If a saved answer linked a news article about commissary savings and a forum thread about moving with pets, those two page types are where earned coverage could matter. A single-page programme site may not be linked at all, which is a result worth recording. The point is the method: the answer, not a guess, tells you which sources to approach.

## How do you test whether coverage helped?

Use a simple before-and-after protocol.

1. Save a baseline of ten questions before any pitch goes out.
2. Record the date each piece of coverage goes live and the URL.
3. Re-ask the same questions two and six weeks later, with the same settings.
4. For each answer, log five fields: brand named, link to your site, link to the coverage, recommendation made and whether web search ran.
5. Compare the logs. If a new source appears in answers and your brand is named, note it as an observation, not as proof.

An ambiguous case is common. If an answer names your brand in a list of six and links the new article, was that a recommendation? Log it as a mention with a link and leave recommendation blank unless the answer says to choose you. Do not turn it into a score.

## What does a first month look like?

A small team can run this without a campaign budget. The order matters more than the volume.

- **Week one:** write ten buyer questions, ask them, and fill the source sheet. Mark which linked pages already name you and which name a competitor instead.
- **Week two:** check your own facts on those pages. Wrong prices, old product names and missing categories are the quickest fixes, because the editor only has to update a line.
- **Week three:** send three to five pitches, each tied to one page and one specific offer. A pitch that says "your roundup lists our old price, here is the current page" is easier to answer than a general introduction.
- **Week four:** log what came back, record the live dates and keep the replies. Hold the re-test until the coverage has been live for a couple of weeks.

Keep a note of what each kind of evidence is. An observed answer is something you saved and can show. A sourced fact comes from OpenAI or Google documentation. First-party experience is what your own team saw in its own runs. Professional judgement is advice, such as which page types to approach first, and it should be labelled as that rather than presented as a finding.

## What can't earned media do?

- It cannot guarantee a citation, since OpenAI documents no such mechanism.
- It cannot be proven from one answer, because answers vary between runs.
- It cannot replace accurate pages on your own site.
- It cannot tell you why a source was chosen. A saved answer shows what was displayed, not the reason.
- It cannot be forced to stay. A linked article can be edited or dropped from a later answer, so keep the dated record of what appeared.

## Where do tools and services fit?

A measurement tool saves the answers and sources so you can repeat the check. [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) works as an [AI Search Visibility Platform](https://primeaivisibility.com/) for that record. The free check runs up to five buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, keeps up to 15 answers with the links each displayed and needs no card. It is one check a month. Starter is $69 a month and adds Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview, so all five assistants are covered. The [features page](https://primeaivisibility.com/features) describes captured answers, brand named, website cited, recommendation and Content Studio, and these are separate measures.

It has no sentiment, crawler or traffic reporting, no managed service, no auto-publishing and no prompt volumes. As an [AI visibility checker](https://primeaivisibility.com/) it gives a baseline, and as an [AI visibility tracker](https://primeaivisibility.com/) it keeps the history. Read the [AI visibility audit guide](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-run-an-ai-visibility-audit) for the process, the [AI visibility strategy](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/ai-visibility-strategy) guide for what to measure first and the guide to [choosing a tool](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-choose-an-ai-visibility-tool) before you buy. For agencies that sell the outreach side, see the [digital PR agency comparison](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/best-digital-pr-agencies-ai-search-visibility-2026).

## Who can help with the outreach?

If the saved answers show other sites carrying your category, the work is outreach and writing, which a tracker does not do. Percepture, a company connected to [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/), writes about how brands improve their [brand visibility in AI search engines](https://percepture.com/geo-insights/what-strategies-improve-brand-visibility-in-ai-search-engines/), which covers the implementation and measurement side. Its [digital PR services](https://percepture.com/services/digital-pr/) cover the outreach itself, and its [generative engine optimization services](https://percepture.com/services/geo-services/) cover the page and structure work on your own site. Because of that connection, weigh it as you would any provider and compare it on the same questions.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I get cited in ChatGPT answers?**
Find which sites ChatGPT links for your buyer questions, earn accurate coverage on the ones that suit your brand and re-ask the same questions to see what changed. No method guarantees a citation.

**Does earned media work better than my own website?**
Not necessarily. It is a different source type. ChatGPT links both owned and third-party pages, and OpenAI does not publish how it weighs them.

**How long until coverage shows up in ChatGPT?**
There is no published timeline. Re-test at two and six weeks and keep each date.

**Is a mention the same as a citation?**
No. A mention names your brand in the text, and a citation links a source. Log them separately, and log a recommendation, a referral and a conversion as their own events.

**Can I pay for citations?**
A vendor that promises a citation is claiming something OpenAI does not document. Paid placements that are not disclosed also carry trust risk.
