# What Is Prompt Volume in AI Visibility Products? Four Data Sources Compared

What is prompt volume in AI visibility products? It is a vendor's estimate of how often people ask an AI engine a question or a topic, used to decide which questions to track first. It is not a count of mentions, citations or visits, and each vendor builds it from different data, so the method behind the number matters more than the number.

This guide compares how Profound, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush describe their versions on public vendor pages read on October 24, 2026. [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) publishes this site, does not report prompt volume, and is marked as affiliated wherever it appears.

## What is prompt volume in AI visibility products: the short answer

1. **It is demand, not performance.** Prompt volume estimates how often a question is asked. Whether your brand was named or linked in the answer is a separate measurement.
2. **It is an estimate.** Nobody outside an AI engine sees every conversation, so every figure comes from a panel, a model, a keyword database or a sample.
3. **Units differ.** One vendor shows keyword volumes, one shows a score from 1 to 5, one weights mentions by Google search volume.
4. **It helps you choose questions.** The honest use is ranking candidate questions before you spend tracking capacity on them.
5. **You can track without it.** A team that picks its own questions from sales and support conversations can run a useful baseline with no volume data at all.

## How is prompt volume different from search volume?

Search volume counts queries typed into a search engine over a period, usually a month. Prompt volume tries to do the same job for conversations with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or similar engines. The two differ in three ways.

- **Wording.** People type a few keywords into a search box and write full sentences or follow-up questions to an assistant, so the same need produces many different prompts.
- **Visibility into the data.** Search engines publish aggregate query data through their own tools. AI engines do not publish a comparable feed, so vendors infer volume from other sources.
- **Meaning of a single prompt.** One conversation can contain several questions, and personalised context changes the answer, so counting "a prompt" is a modelling choice.

For that reason a prompt-volume number behaves more like a forecast of interest than a measured count. Treat it as a way to rank questions against each other, not as a promise of how many people will see an answer that names you.

## Where do the numbers come from?

Vendors describe four broad approaches. A single product can combine more than one.

| Approach | What it uses | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Opted-in panel | Conversations from consenting users | Panel size and who is in it |
| Search-keyword model | A keyword database expanded into questions | Whether search volume stands in for AI usage |
| Relative score | A rating of demand for each tracked topic | How the scale is built |
| Strategist selection | A person chooses the questions | Whether any volume data is added |

None of these is automatically better. A panel can be large and still skew toward the people who joined it. A keyword model rests on real searches but assumes searches and prompts line up. A relative score is easy to read and hides its method. A strategist can reflect what buyers say on calls and may show no demand data at all.

## What do vendors say about their own prompt volume?

| Vendor | What the page calls it | Data source stated |
|---|---|---|
| Profound | Prompt Volumes: keyword volumes, topic trends and intent | Conversations in answer engines; says opted-in consumer panels |
| Peec AI | Prompt volume: relative demand scored 1 to 5 | Not verified |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Estimated Impressions and search demand per prompt | Ahrefs keyword database and People Also Ask |
| Semrush Prompt Research | AI topic volume and intent | 317M+ prompts, refreshed monthly; collection method Not verified |
| Hotwire Spark | No volume metric listed | Strategists help choose queries |
| [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) (affiliated) | No prompt volume | You choose up to five questions |

Profound's Prompt Volumes page describes keyword data "pulled from millions of conversations in answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity". It says its research reports draw on more than 1.5 billion real AI conversations, and that its data comes from double opt-in consumer panels rather than API outputs or synthetic estimates. Those are Profound's statements about its own data, and this guide cannot confirm them independently.

Peec AI's pricing page lists prompt volume under its Discover features as "relative demand for the topic behind each tracked prompt, scored 1–5". The same page lists intent classification as informational, commercial or transactional.

Ahrefs states its position in plain terms. Brand Radar builds its prompts from Ahrefs' keyword database and Google's People Also Ask data, expands them into related questions and runs them through the free web interfaces of the engines. Its methodology page says the Estimated Impressions metric weights mentions by Google search volume and adds that this is "a modeling choice, not a measured relationship" with no validated link between search volume and how often a query is asked inside an AI tool.

Semrush's Prompt Research page says it holds "317M+ real prompts, refreshed monthly" and shows how often specific topics are asked about across AI platforms, with intent labels, across more than 40 markets. How those prompts were collected is not stated on the page, so that field is Not verified here.

## What units and access does each vendor list?

| Vendor | Unit shown | Access as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Profound | Volume by keyword and topic; filters for platform, age range and income bracket | Free Trial: 5 searches; Enterprise: custom |
| Peec AI | A 1 to 5 relative score | Plans $95, $245 and $495 a month; which plan includes it Not verified |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Estimated Impressions and search demand | Custom Prompts from $50 a month; AI Visibility Index from $199 |
| Semrush Prompt Research | Topic volume and intent | 7-day free trial; price Not verified |

Read the units before comparing vendors. A 1 to 5 score, a keyword count and an impressions estimate answer different questions, and no conversion between them exists. Two vendors can rank the same pair of questions in opposite order without either being wrong, because they measure different things.

Ahrefs lists AI engine coverage that includes ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude for prompts, and Profound lists ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity for its prompt aggregation. Coverage for the volume figures themselves can differ from coverage for tracking, so ask which engines sit behind the number.

## How do you separate volume from mention, citation and recommendation?

Prompt volume sits upstream of the visibility measures. Keep five things in separate columns and never blend them into one score:

1. **Prompt volume.** How often the question is asked, as estimated by a vendor.
2. **Mention.** The saved answer names your brand.
3. **Citation.** The saved answer links to a page on your website.
4. **Recommendation.** The answer clearly suggests your brand for the situation in the question.
5. **Referral and conversion.** These come from your own analytics, not from the answer.

The [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) [features](https://primeaivisibility.com/features) page describes the same separation for what it does measure: Brand named, Website cited, an explicit recommendation and multi-model tracking are different measures. A high-volume question where your brand is never named is a gap. A low-volume question where you are named and linked may still be worth keeping because the buyer behind it is close to a decision.

## How can you use a relative demand score without over-trusting it?

Imagine a regional accounting-software firm choosing five questions to track. The scores below are invented for illustration and come from no vendor.

| Question | Relative demand, invented | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Best accounting software for small firms | 5 | Track |
| Does accounting software handle sales tax | 3 | Track |
| Accounting software for a two-person studio | 2 | Track: close to a purchase |
| What is double-entry bookkeeping | 4 | Skip: no buying decision |
| Accounting software import errors | 1 | Track: a support question buyers ask |

Two of the five rows ignore the score, and that is the point. Demand tells you how many people ask, and fit tells you whether an answer can lead to a customer. Rank by both, keep the rows you disagree with in a notes column, and recheck after a month.

## How do you test a vendor's volume claim?

Before you rely on any prompt-volume figure, run a short protocol.

1. **Ask for the source in writing.** Panel, keyword database, sample of API runs or model, and the size and date range of each.
2. **Ask which engines and countries sit behind the number.** A figure for one engine does not describe another.
3. **Ask how a prompt is counted.** Is a long conversation one prompt or several, and are near-identical wordings merged?
4. **Pick ten questions you already know the answer to.** Choose five your sales team hears every week and five it has never heard.
5. **Compare the ranking.** If the vendor ranks the never-heard questions above the weekly ones, find out why before you plan around the data.
6. **Ask what refresh period applies.** Semrush states monthly, and Ahrefs says Search Demand refreshes every few days. Other vendors may not say.

A vendor that answers these plainly is easier to trust than one that shows only a large total. Keep the written answers with your tracking notes so the next reviewer can see what the numbers rested on.

## What should you do after you pick your questions?

Start with the pages, not the dashboard. The [AI visibility audit process](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-run-an-ai-visibility-audit) and the [AI visibility strategy](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/ai-visibility-strategy) guide turn saved answers into an order of work, and the [buyer guide to choosing tools](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-choose-an-ai-visibility-tool) lists fixed criteria for the buying decision. For vendor-specific detail on a managed report, see the [Hotwire GAIO.tech prompt volume](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/comparisons/hotwire-gaio-tech-prompt-volume) explainer.

For hands-on implementation, Percepture, a company connected to [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/), covers [AI visibility tools](https://percepture.com/geo-insights/ai-visibility-tools/) and the measurement and content work that follows. Its [generative engine optimization services](https://percepture.com/services/geo-services/) are the hands-on route. It is a services firm, not a tracker, so it pairs with one.

## What can a public resource site teach about choosing questions?

My Military Lifestyle is a public site in a different industry, so it works as a neutral example of how question lists can be organised. Its [homepage](https://mymilitarylifestyle.com/) publishes articles for military families, and its [resources page](https://mymilitarylifestyle.com/military-resources) groups military base guides, a dictionary, pay charts, ranks and other trusted resources.

This is an illustrative public website, not a Prime AI client, endorsement or paid relationship, and it says nothing about how any AI engine treats it. The lesson is about structure. A site with clear resource categories can write its tracking questions by category, ask one set about bases, another about terms and another about pay, and compare saved answers category by category, whichever tool supplies the demand estimate.

## Where does [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) fit?

[Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) is an [AI Search Visibility Platform](https://primeaivisibility.com/) built around saved answers, and it does not estimate prompt volume. The free check runs up to five buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, saves up to 15 answers with the links each one displayed and needs no card. It is one check a month, so it is a baseline. Starter is $69 a month and adds Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview. It does not report sentiment, crawler visits or traffic, and it has no managed service.

Used as an [AI visibility checker](https://primeaivisibility.com/), the free check gives a first read of the questions you chose. As an [AI visibility tracker](https://primeaivisibility.com/), it keeps the same questions for rechecks. A team weighing an [AI Visibility Platform](https://primeaivisibility.com/) with volume data against one without can use the saved answers as shared evidence, and any [AI Brand Visibility Tool](https://primeaivisibility.com/) should be judged on whether its records hold up when you reread them. [Google's guidance on helpful content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content) asks whether content is made for people and shows first-hand experience, which is the same standard to apply when you choose which questions deserve an answer. Because [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) is the publisher, treat this section as an affiliated recommendation.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is prompt volume in AI visibility products?**
It is a vendor's estimate of how often people ask an AI engine a question or topic. It helps you rank which questions to track first, and it says nothing about whether your brand was named or linked in the answer.

**Is prompt volume the same as search volume?**
No. Search volume counts queries typed into a search engine. Prompt volume is an estimate for conversations with AI assistants, and vendors build it from panels, keyword databases or models, so the two are not interchangeable.

**Which tools show prompt volume?**
Profound lists Prompt Volumes, Peec AI lists a 1 to 5 relative demand score, Ahrefs Brand Radar shows search-demand-weighted Estimated Impressions and Semrush offers Prompt Research with topic volume. Each describes its own method.

**Can I track AI visibility without prompt volume?**
Yes. You can choose questions from sales calls, support tickets and your own search data, save every answer and log named, cited and recommended separately. Volume data is an aid for choosing questions, not a requirement.

**Is a high prompt-volume score proof that a question matters to my buyers?**
No. A high score means many people ask, not that the question leads to a purchase. Rank questions by both demand and fit with your buying decision.

**How often does prompt volume change?**
Vendors state different refresh periods, from every few days to monthly, and some state none. Treat every figure here as a reading from October 24, 2026 and confirm current terms on the vendor page.
