# AthenaHQ Alternatives: Seven Options by Reason, Price and Limits (2026)

AthenaHQ alternatives fall into groups by the reason a team is leaving. AthenaHQ lists a free Essential plan with 300 credits, a $295 monthly Starter plan with 3,600 credits and a custom Enterprise plan. Teams usually look elsewhere over the step from free to $295, the credit unit, the engine list, API access or the lack of content writing.

This article uses vendor pages read in October 2026. No product was run for it, and claims about results, customers or ratings are the vendors' own. [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) publishes this site and sells a competing product, so it appears in its own section and is not ranked against the others.

## AthenaHQ alternatives: the short answer

1. **For a published monthly price below $295**, Otterly.AI, Mangools, HubSpot AEO and Promptwatch each list one. Their units are prompts, not AthenaHQ credits.
2. **For content next to tracking**, Promptwatch and Cognizo list monthly article allowances. AirOps lists content tasks.
3. **For agents and a sales-led route**, Profound lists a free trial and a custom plan.
4. **For a no-cost baseline**, the free check at [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) keeps up to 15 saved answers.
5. **The units differ.** A credit, a prompt, a task and an article are not interchangeable, so no price is compared across them here.

## How was this compared?

Each option is read on the same five checks: what the plan is built to do, its billing unit, the engines listed, the published price and the limit most likely to bind. A cell reads Not listed where a page did not state a fact. Prices are list prices in US dollars, with the billing term named where the page gives one. Google's SEO Starter Guide frames the baseline: its advice on making your content findable and useful comes before any AI-answer report, so a monitor is worth buying only if it points to pages you can improve.

## What does AthenaHQ list today?

| Plan | Price | What the page lists |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Free | $25 free credit, 300 credits, 5 engines, unlimited users |
| Starter | $295 a month | 3,600 credits, 11 models, unlimited topics, prompts and competitors |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom credits, SSO, audit log, BI dashboards, setup support |

The page says one credit is one AI response. Essential lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. Starter adds AI Mode, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, with more on request. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons on Starter, with no add-on price shown, and API access is included on Enterprise. Starter also lists country-level support, CSV export, on-page and off-page actions and a content optimization agent. A toggle on the page shows annual billing at 17% off.

## Which reason for leaving points to which option?

| Reason | Option to read first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free-to-$295 step feels large | Otterly.AI, Mangools, HubSpot AEO | Each lists an entry price below $295 a month |
| Want a different unit | Mangools, Otterly.AI | They bill prompts, not responses |
| Need content with tracking | Promptwatch, Cognizo, AirOps | Each lists content production |
| Need an API without an add-on | Mangools, Otterly.AI | Both list API access on listed plans |
| Want agents at scale | Profound | Agents and analytics, sales-led |

The API row needs care. Mangools lists API and MCP access on its free and Pro plans. Otterly.AI lists API and MCP access from Standard at $189 a month, not on Lite.

## What does each alternative list?

| Option | Published price | Unit and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29, $189, $489 monthly billing | Prompts: 15, 100, 400 |
| Mangools | $0, $34.90 billed annually | Prompts: 5, 500; each checked twice |
| HubSpot AEO | $50 ($45 billed annually) | 25 prompts on 3 engines; Beta |
| Promptwatch | $95, $245, $579 | Prompts 50, 150, 350; articles from $245 |
| Cognizo | $499, $999 via demo | Prompts 150, 350; 8 or 20 articles |
| Profound | Free trial, custom Enterprise | 50 prompts for 7 days on trial |
| AirOps | Not listed for Solo or Pro | Tasks: 35,000 and 100,000 |

Read across a row, not down a column. A $29 plan with 15 prompts and a $34.90 plan with 500 prompts do not buy the same thing, and AthenaHQ's 3,600 credits count responses, which neither prompts nor tasks do. Our [AthenaHQ vs AirOps](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/comparisons/athenahq-vs-airops) and [Profound vs AthenaHQ](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/comparisons/profound-vs-athena-ai-for-geo) pages read the two closest head-to-heads in more detail.

## What is each option best for?

**Otterly.AI.** Monitoring with a 7-day trial and four engines included, with Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude as paid add-ons. It lists audits and recommendations and does not write content in its core product.

**Mangools.** A small paid entry at $34.90 a month billed annually, with eight engines listed, weekly updates and each prompt checked twice. The page lists no content-writing tool.

**HubSpot AEO.** A $50 monthly product for teams already inside HubSpot, with three engines and a Beta label. A higher bundle adds marketing and content tools.

**Promptwatch.** Tracking on a ladder from $95 with a 7-day trial on its lower plans, and five articles a month from the $245 plan.

**Cognizo.** A demo-led program from $499 with a content agent and a customer success partner. Claude is listed only on its Enterprise plan.

**Profound.** A free 7-day trial and a custom Enterprise plan with up to nine engines, agents and SSO. Exports, history and API access sit with Enterprise.

**AirOps.** A content and workflow system billed in tasks, with insights on its Pro plan and no monthly price on the pages read.

In our judgement, the likeliest swap for a team that finds $295 a large step is a prompt-based monitor with a published price. The likeliest swap for a team that wants writing help is a content-plus-tracking plan. These are editorial judgements, not measured outcomes.

## Which signals does each report?

Keep five signals separate whichever product you use:

1. **Mention.** An answer names the brand.
2. **Citation.** An answer links a page.
3. **Recommendation.** An answer suggests the brand as a choice.
4. **Referral.** A visit arrives from an answer.
5. **Conversion.** The visit becomes a lead or sale.

AthenaHQ's feature table lists sentiment, citation intelligence and GA4 and Search Console integration, so confirm with AthenaHQ which plan includes sentiment and integrations before you rely on them. For background on how generative engine optimization differs from classic search work, see Percepture's [GEO vs SEO overview](https://percepture.com/geo-insights/what-is-generative-engine-optimization-geo-vs-seo/). Most alternatives list mentions and citations, and the pages read gave a conversion method for few of them. The first two signals are what the engine displayed, and the last two are what your own analytics show.

## What should you check before you switch?

1. **Export what you have.** Starter lists CSV export, so save your history before you cancel.
2. **List the engines you rely on.** Claude and Grok sit on Starter, and several alternatives list fewer engines.
3. **Check the unit.** Convert your monthly use into prompts, tasks or articles only after asking how each vendor counts.
4. **Note integrations.** AthenaHQ lists Shopify, Webflow, GA4 and Search Console, so list those you use.
5. **Ask who writes.** If you use the content optimization agent, decide who will draft pages afterwards.

An invented example: a team on Starter checks two engines and never opens the API. A prompt-based plan with those two engines may cover the real use, and the 3,600 credits were never the limit.

## How should you test an AthenaHQ alternative?

1. **Write 20 buyer questions** and freeze the wording outside every tool.
2. **Save a manual baseline:** answers from ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity with the links each displayed.
3. **Load the same questions** into the free tier or trial of each option you shortlist.
4. **Compare per question,** not per score, against your baseline and against what AthenaHQ showed.
5. **Count the cost of the unit you will hit first,** whether prompts, credits, tasks or articles.
6. **Ask each vendor in writing** what happens when you run out, who owns saved answers and which plan includes API access.

## What can a vertical show about question sets?

My Military Lifestyle is a public site in another field, so it works as an illustration. Its [homepage](https://mymilitarylifestyle.com/) publishes family and lifestyle articles, and its [military resources page](https://mymilitarylifestyle.com/military-resources) describes a guide to 133 installations and a dictionary of military terms. Resource and destination questions such as "which guide lists bases in Guam" (invented) are the kind a generic prompt list would miss. An engine's answer could cite the site's pages or someone else's, and only a saved answer shows which. This is an illustrative public website, not a Prime AI client, endorsement or paid relationship, and it carries no AI-search outcome.

## Where does [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) fit?

[Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/) is an [AI Search Visibility Platform](https://primeaivisibility.com/) built around saved answers. The free check runs up to five buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, keeps up to 15 answers with the links each displayed, and needs no card. It is one check a month. Starter is $69 a month and adds Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview. It reports brand named and website cited as separate counts, and its Content Studio drafts pages as files with nothing published without approval.

It has no sentiment, crawler or traffic reporting, no managed service, no auto-publishing and no prompt volumes, so it does not match AthenaHQ's Enterprise features. Use it as an [AI visibility checker](https://primeaivisibility.com/) for a baseline, then as an [AI visibility tracker](https://primeaivisibility.com/) if a smaller question set is enough. The [features page](https://primeaivisibility.com/features) lists what it reports. This is a disclosed affiliated recommendation, not an independent ranking.

For the process, read the [AI visibility audit guide](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-run-an-ai-visibility-audit), the [AI visibility strategy](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/ai-visibility-strategy) guide and the guide to [choosing a tool](https://primeaivisibility.com/articles/ai-visibility/how-to-choose-an-ai-visibility-tool). ## When is implementation the next job?

If a test shows pages answers skip or misstate, the work moves to content, sources and structure. Percepture, a company connected to [Prime AI Visibility](https://primeaivisibility.com/), covers [AI visibility tools](https://percepture.com/geo-insights/ai-visibility-tools/) and measurement. Its [generative engine optimization services](https://percepture.com/services/geo-services/) cover the implementation. It is a services firm, not a tracker.
