AEO tools for accounting firms do one job: they run the questions your prospects ask an AI assistant, save each answer, and show which firms were named and which pages were linked. A practice cannot make an assistant recommend it, and no tool changes that. What a tool can do is show whether the assistants name your firm for the services and cities you care about, and whether they describe it correctly. For a small practice the deciding factors are price per question, whether you can set a location, and who does the fixing afterwards.

This guide compares published specifications from each vendor's own pricing pages as they read on October 17, 2026. It is not a hands-on test of any product. Prime AI Visibility publishes this site and is included under the same criteria, with its limits stated. Opinion is labelled as such.

What answer engine optimization means for an accounting firm

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a firm's facts easy for assistants to find, read and cite. It is part of the wider discipline of generative engine optimization. For an accounting firm, three things make it different from a software company's version of the same job.

  1. Buyers ask local, advisory questions. "Who can handle multi-state payroll tax near me?" is a location plus a specialty, not a product comparison.
  2. The service is invisible until described. A firm sells judgement, so the pages that explain who does the work, for which clients and under which credentials are the evidence an assistant can quote.
  3. Wrong answers carry risk. An assistant that misstates a service, an office or a filing deadline can send a prospect to the wrong firm. The first job of measurement is to see what is being said.

Google states that its AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no extra technical requirements beyond that. So the groundwork is ordinary: crawlable pages with clear, dated, people-first content. Tools sit on top of that and observe the result.

The buyer questions an accounting firm should track

Write questions without your firm's name, the way a prospect would. In our judgement, a practice with two offices and four service lines needs about 40 to start.

Question type Example pattern What it tests
Local discovery Best accountant for [client type] in [city] Named for place and fit
Specialty Who handles [tax situation] for [industry] Named for a service line
Comparison [Firm type] vs [firm type] for [need] Framing against rivals
Trust Is [firm] a licensed CPA firm Credentials described
Cost What does [service] cost for [client] Fee guidance accuracy
Timing When should a [client] switch accountants Advice you could shape

Keep each question's wording frozen between checks so results stay comparable. Do not use tax-law questions as a test of your firm. The assistant's answer to a general tax question tells you nothing about your visibility.

A question budget for a small practice

This is our own arithmetic, using an illustrative firm. Two offices × four service lines × five question types comes to 40 questions.

  • 40 questions × 3 engines = 120 answers per check.
  • Weekly checks (4 a month) = 480 answers a month.
  • Daily checks (30 a month) = 3,600 answers a month.

Compare that with plan limits. A plan with 50 prompts leaves room for 40 questions and 10 spare, while a plan with 15 prompts covers one office and one service line. Ask each vendor whether a prompt is counted per engine, per location or per run, because the count changes the arithmetic.

AEO tools for accounting firms: what six options publish

Option Entry price Prompts
Otterly Lite $29/mo 15
Peec AI Starter €85/mo 50
Otterly Standard $189/mo 100
Gauge Growth $599/mo 600
Profound Trial free 50 on Trial
Prime AI Starter $69/mo 25 per check

Notes: Profound's Enterprise package is custom and has no published price. Peec AI's Starter is billed monthly and lists daily tracking, three chosen models and unlimited users. Otterly lists daily tracking and four engines on every plan. Gauge lists 600 prompts run daily on six platforms. Prime AI's limit is per check, and each question's cost in credits depends on the tool.

Option Engines Location settings
Otterly 4, add-ons Countries
Peec AI 3 chosen Multi-country
Gauge 6 Single
Profound 3 Trial 1 region
Prime AI All five Market named

Methodology note: every cell is what a vendor publishes, not measured accuracy. Otterly's four engines are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini as add-ons, and its pricing page lists unlimited countries and languages. Peec's Advanced plan lists multi-country and its feature list includes regions and languages. Gauge's Growth plan lists a single location. Profound's Trial lists one region and one language, and its Enterprise column is custom. None of the pages we read describes targeting by city, so for a local firm that is the first question to put to any vendor.

What the location column means for a local firm

Most buyers of accounting services want a firm in their area, and the visible pages describe country and language, not city. In our judgement, there are two workable approaches. Put the city in the question text, which any product that saves your wording can run, or ask the vendor in writing how a city-level question is handled and whether the answer reflects the searcher's location. Either way, save the full answer, because a score alone cannot show which city an answer was talking about.

Fit and limitation for each option

Otterly fits a small firm that wants a low entry price and daily tracking. Limitation: Lite caps tracking at 15 prompts, which covers one location and one service line in the illustration above.

Peec AI fits a firm that wants daily tracking with more prompts and unlimited users. Limitation: Starter lets you choose three models, and the multi-country feature appears at the higher Advanced tier.

Gauge fits a growing multi-service firm that wants daily tracking, a content engine and a stated price. Limitation: $599 a month is a large step for a small practice, and Growth lists a single location.

Profound fits a larger firm that wants to try the product free for seven days before a demo. Limitation: the Trial runs 50 prompts for seven days with one region and no exports, and Enterprise has no published price.

Prime AI fits as a low-cost way to save answers for a fixed question set, described below.

Where Prime AI fits, and where it does not

Affiliation: Prime AI Visibility is our own product. You write the buyer questions, it runs each check across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, and it saves every answer with the names mentioned and the links shown. Its reports identify the market for each check. The features page lists the rest.

Credit arithmetic for a firm, from the published pricing: a question costs 1 credit on ChatGPT, 2 on Perplexity, 3 on Claude, 2 on Gemini and 2 on the AI Overview-style preview, or 10 across all five. Starter's 200 credits and 25-question limit therefore cover 20 questions across all five tools once a month, or the full 25-question limit on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini alone (5 credits a question, 125 credits). Flash is free for five questions on ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.

Limitations: Prime AI Visibility does not document city-level targeting, so put the city in the question. It does not report sentiment or rank, does not record crawler visits, traffic or conversions, and does not grade whether a fact is correct. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI or Google AI Mode, and it does not publish content for you. Checks run monthly by default, with weekly, temporary daily and on-demand checks on paid plans. PyraBuilds' Prime AI agent profile describes the product in Pyra's agent catalogue. Mention, citation, recommendation, referral and conversion

Keep five signals separate in every report.

  1. Mention. An answer names your firm.
  2. Citation. An answer links to a page you own.
  3. Recommendation. An answer puts the firm forward for the prospect's need.
  4. Referral. A visitor arrives from an AI tool, read in your site analytics.
  5. Conversion. The visit becomes an inquiry or an engagement, read in your CRM.

A monitoring tool covers the first three from saved answers. Referral and conversion come from your own analytics. The metrics page defines each measure used on this site.

A four-week pilot for a firm

  1. Week 1: write 20 to 40 questions across the types above and freeze the wording.
  2. Week 1: run them yourself and keep the answers with their links as a baseline.
  3. Week 2: run the same set in two products, with the same competitor list.
  4. Week 3: open ten answers per product. Check that the firm names, office locations, services and credentials in each answer match your own pages.
  5. Week 4: rerun the baseline. Answers vary between runs, so treat only large, repeated gaps as findings.
  6. Close with a plan. Follow our AI visibility audit to turn the gaps into a ranked fix list, and set the work within an AI visibility strategy.

When the next job is implementation

A tool shows gaps. Fixing a practice's pages, earning mentions on the directories and publications assistants cite, and keeping partner-reviewed content flowing is separate work. Percepture, founded in 2004 and Inc. 5000-recognized, offers generative engine optimization services as part of its wider digital marketing and PR services. A services firm cannot sit in the tool tables above, so we state fit and limitation separately. Fit: a firm that wants search, answer-engine and earned-media work planned together. Limitation: Percepture is a services firm, not a monitoring product, so it pairs with one. Prime AI Visibility has a commercial relationship with Percepture.

Firms with many service pages to maintain can also look at Pyra's AI agents for marketing and sales, which include human-approved content operations agents. In our judgement, any page about tax or advisory services should be reviewed by a partner before it goes live. Pyra's anonymised AI visibility case study covers a different industry and is a published client result, not a benchmark for accounting. Pyra is also commercially connected to Prime AI Visibility.

Frequently asked questions

What are AEO tools for accounting firms?

They are monitoring products that run a fixed set of prospect questions across AI assistants and save each answer with the firms named and the links shown.

Can a tool make an assistant recommend my firm?

No. Engines do not publish how they choose firms to name. A tool shows what is being said, and the fixing is work on your pages and third-party coverage.

How many questions does a small firm need?

In our judgement about 40 for two offices and four service lines. Fewer can cover one office and one service line.

Do these tools target a city?

The pricing pages we read describe country and language settings, not city. Put the city in the question and ask the vendor in writing how it is handled.

Which option is cheapest?

Among published prices, Otterly Lite at $29 a month for 15 prompts, then Prime AI Starter at $69 a month and Peec AI Starter at €85 a month. The unit differs between vendors, so compare questions per month, not sticker price.

Should I test tax questions?

No. Test the questions a prospect asks when choosing a firm. The assistant's answer to a general tax question says nothing about your visibility.
