AI Search Monitoring API: Three Routes, One Record and a Parity Test

An AI search monitoring API lets your own systems collect AI answers about your brand on a schedule. There are three kinds: provider APIs with a web search tool, answer-capture APIs that return what the consumer interface shows, and platform APIs that export a tracking tool's data. Pick by one test: does the data match what your buyers see?

AI search monitoring API: the short answer

  1. Provider APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Perplexity) give you full control of the question, model, location and search settings, and return answer text with citations. They are the closest relative of each product, not the product itself.
  2. Answer-capture APIs (for example DataForSEO's LLM Scraper and cloro) return structured results from the consumer search experience, including parsed sources. They are built to close the gap between an API answer and the app a buyer uses.
  3. Platform APIs (for example Profound, Scrunch and Keyword.com) export data from a tracking product you already run. Some return every saved answer; others return only aggregated metrics.
  4. No answer record contains clicks or revenue. Mention, citation and recommendation come from the saved answer. Referral comes from your analytics, and conversion comes from your CRM.
  5. Run a parity test before you trust any route. Compare the API result with the consumer app on the same questions, on the same day, and decide what level of agreement you accept.

What an AI search monitoring API has to record

File exports from Prime AI Visibility are a different delivery route from a machine-to-machine API; choose the record format before the vendor.

Before choosing a vendor, decide what one row of data must hold. Most monitoring projects fail at the record, not the collection: answers get saved without the conditions that produced them, so next month's comparison cannot be trusted. If you have not yet set the questions, engines and outcomes, start with an AI visibility strategy and come back to this section.

The table below is a minimum record for one question, on one engine, in one run. It works the same whichever route collects the answer.

Field Example Why it matters
Question ID and version Q14 v2 Wording changes break comparisons
Engine and route ChatGPT, provider API Routes return different answers
Model or mode Search model name Models change without notice
Search setting Web search on Search off answers from training data
Location US, California Answers vary by market
Timestamp and sample number 2026-10-13, 2 of 3 Repeat runs vary
Answer text Full text, unedited The evidence behind every metric
Cited URLs Each URL and title Citation is a separate outcome
Brands named Yours and rivals Mention and competitor context
Recommends Yes or no, plus reason Naming alone is not enough
Status Complete, partial, missing Missing answers must not score

Two fields cause most of the trouble. Search setting matters because an answer written without web search draws on training data, which tells you something different from a search-grounded answer. Status matters because a failed call that quietly drops out of the denominator makes visibility look better than it is. The measurement model for tracking LLM visibility without a rank explains why a stable rank is not part of this record.

Route 1: provider APIs with a web search tool

Each major provider documents a way to make its model search the web and cite sources through the API.

  • OpenAI. The Responses API offers a web_search tool, and Chat Completions offers a search model that OpenAI says gives direct access to the fine-tuned models and tool used by Search in ChatGPT. Answers carry url_citation annotations with the URL, title and the position of the cited text, and you can set an approximate user location by country, city, region and timezone.
  • Anthropic. Claude's web search tool costs $10 per 1,000 searches plus normal token costs. Each search counts as one use, and a max_uses setting caps how many searches one request can run. Citations include the URL, title and the cited text, and requests can set a user location and allowed or blocked domains.
  • Google Gemini. Grounding with Google Search returns the answer with URL citations plus the search queries the model ran. Google's terms attach display requirements to the search suggestions it returns.
  • Perplexity. Perplexity publishes per-request pricing: its Search API costs $5 per 1,000 requests, and the web_search tool in its Agent API costs $2.50 per 1,000 standard calls.

Fit. Provider APIs suit a team that already runs a data pipeline and wants full control. You choose the exact model, the location and the search settings, you keep the raw response, and the terms of use are the provider's published API terms.

Limitation. The API is related to the consumer product, not identical to it. Interface features such as personalization, answer layout and the product's own retrieval choices may not apply. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode appear on Google results pages, and a Gemini API answer is a Gemini answer, not a copy of either. Claude is a good example of a provider-API route that a small team can run cheaply; the guide to what free Claude tracking routes can and cannot measure covers that case.

Route 2: answer-capture APIs

Answer-capture APIs return the results a person would see in the consumer product, parsed into structured data.

  • DataForSEO offers several AI Optimization endpoints. Its LLM Responses API sends prompts to multiple models through one interface. Its LLM Scraper API returns results from ChatGPT's search mode, including the sources and brands quoted, with a separate endpoint for the raw HTML page, and the product page lists ChatGPT and Gemini as supported platforms. Its LLM Mentions API queries a database of prompts for brand and domain mentions. Pricing is usage-based with a free trial.
  • cloro describes itself as one API for Google and every AI search engine. It returns markdown, text or HTML plus parsed sources, citations, query fan-out and shopping blocks, with country targeting on every engine and state-level targeting in the US. Its site lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, publishes a credit cost per engine (for example 5 credits per ChatGPT web search prompt and 4 per Perplexity or Gemini prompt) and offers 500 free credits.
  • SerpApi has separate Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode APIs. Its AI Overview endpoint uses a page token from a Google search request that expires within one minute, so the two calls must run back to back.

Fit. Answer-capture APIs suit teams whose question is "what did a buyer see?" rather than "what can the model say?". They also remove the work of building and maintaining interface scrapers yourself.

Limitation. Interface capture depends on pages that change, and each consumer product has its own terms. OpenAI's Terms of Use for ChatGPT, for example, list automatically or programmatically extracting data or Output among prohibited uses. Ask every capture vendor how its collection fits each engine's terms, how it handles interface changes and what it does when a capture fails.

Route 3: platform APIs

If a tracking platform already runs your questions, its API lets you pull that data into a warehouse, dashboard or reporting tool.

  • Profound documents a REST API, available on its Enterprise plan, that returns processed reports and raw per-execution prompt-answer rows, including model responses, mentions, citations and search queries.
  • Scrunch separates a Query API for pre-aggregated metrics such as brand presence, sentiment and citation rate from a Responses API that returns full AI answers, citations, competitors and metadata for each prompt execution. Its documentation includes a guide to loading response-level data into a warehouse.
  • Keyword.com offers an AI Visibility Tracker API with aggregated metrics such as visibility scores, brand presence, sentiment and competitor benchmarks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Copilot. Its documentation states that the API returns high-level reporting data, not individual executions or raw AI answers. It offers a 14-day trial.

Fit. Platform APIs suit teams that want someone else to run collection while they own reporting. Response-level exports let you audit every metric.

Limitation. Aggregated metrics follow the vendor's definitions. A "visibility score" or "share of voice" from one platform rarely matches another's, so check the definitions before mixing sources. The AI search share of voice measurement guide shows how much a share figure depends on its denominator.

Options compared on the same four criteria

Each option below is described from its own public documentation as of October 13, 2026, not from trials, against the same four questions: what does it return, how is the answer collected, which engines does it cover, and what is its main limitation. The table summarizes what each option returns and its main gap; the sections above and below cover collection and engines. The list is a set of examples, not a ranking.

Prime AI Visibility is a related party. It was built by Pyra AI, where the author of this guide is CTO, and it is commercially connected to Percepture, which appears later in this guide. It is assessed on the same four criteria as the others.

Option Returns Main gap
Provider APIs Answers App parity
DataForSEO Answers Scraper scope
cloro Answers Terms
Profound Both Plan tier
Scrunch Both Metrics
Keyword.com Metrics No answers
Prime AI Visibility Files No API

In the gap column, scraper scope means DataForSEO's LLM Scraper lists ChatGPT and Gemini, terms means the interface-capture questions covered above, plan tier means Profound's API is on its Enterprise plan, and metrics means aggregated figures follow Scrunch's own definitions. Keyword.com returns no raw answers, and Prime AI Visibility offers file exports rather than an API.

Prime AI Visibility. Returns: saved answers with their available sources, Brand named, Website cited and recommendation reporting, and a 0 to 100 score, inside a workspace. Collection: Prime AI's metrics page states that its observations are API-based and can differ from a person's consumer-app experience. Engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, which is not a capture of the live Google panel; it does not cover Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode. Limitation: Prime AI's pricing and features pages list PDF and CSV exports (free of credits), not a developer API, so a team that needs scheduled machine-to-machine delivery into a warehouse would have to move export files itself. PyraBuilds' Prime AI agent profile shows how a question becomes saved answers and sources.

API answers versus the consumer app

The central question for any route is parity: how closely an API result matches what a buyer sees in the app. Vendors on both sides have published views. Surfer, which sells AI tracking built on scraped interface data, reported a study of 1,000 prompts and 13,779 answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews. In that study, the brands named by the API and by the scraped interface overlapped by only 15.5% to 23.8%, rising to 21.3% to 31.6% after brand names were normalized. Treat that as one vendor's study, with a stake in the result, and test your own questions.

A parity test you can run in one afternoon

This protocol works for any route, including a platform you already pay for.

  1. Pick 20 questions from your tracked set, weighted toward the recommendation questions that matter most commercially.
  2. Fix the conditions. One country, one day, web search on, and a fresh session in the consumer app for each question.
  3. Collect both sides. Run each question through the API route and by hand in the consumer app, and save both answers in full.
  4. Score brand overlap. For each question, divide the brands named in both answers by the brands named in either. If the API names four brands, the app names five and three are shared, overlap is 3 ÷ 6 = 0.5.
  5. Score citation overlap the same way, using cited domains.
  6. Check recommendation agreement. Count the questions where both answers do, or both do not, recommend your brand.
  7. Repeat once a week later, so you can see how much the app disagrees with itself.

Step 7 matters more than it looks. If two runs of the consumer app agree with each other only half the time, an API route that agrees with the app half the time may be as good as any single reading can be. Decide your acceptance level from that baseline, not from a perfect-match ideal.

Call volume and cost: a worked example

Budget an AI search monitoring API by counting calls, then searches, then tokens. A modest program looks like this:

  • 25 questions × 5 engines × 3 samples per run × 4 weekly runs = 1,500 answer calls a month.
  • On Claude alone that is 300 calls a month. If a request is capped at three searches, search fees reach at most 900 searches, or $9 at Anthropic's published $10 per 1,000, before token costs.
  • With cloro's published credit costs, 300 ChatGPT web search prompts use 1,500 credits and 300 Perplexity prompts use 1,200 credits.

The bigger cost is usually people: writing the parser, storing and versioning answers, classifying mentions and recommendations, handling failed calls and keeping up with model changes. Price that time before comparing it with a platform subscription.

For comparison, Prime AI Visibility's pricing page lists one question across all five of its AI tools at 10 credits, so 25 questions across five tools cost 250 credits per check. Four weekly checks use 1,000 credits a month, which fits the Agency plan's 1,300 monthly credits ($369 a month) but not Growth's 600. Prime AI saves one answer per question and tool in each check, so repeat sampling means extra checks. The Prime AI Visibility features describe the saved-answer and export workflow rather than a developer API. The AI visibility metrics and methodology define the answer-level counts. See Prime AI Visibility pricing for current plan limits.

Five outcomes, three systems

Monitoring answers is only half of measurement. Track the five outcomes separately, because each comes from a different system:

  • Mention. The answer names your brand. Source: the saved answer.
  • Citation. The answer cites one of your pages. Source: the cited URLs in the record.
  • Recommendation. The answer suggests your brand for the stated need. Source: the saved answer, read in context.
  • Referral. A person clicks from an AI tool to your site. Source: analytics sessions whose referrer or campaign tags identify an AI tool.
  • Conversion. That visit becomes a demo request, trial or sale. Source: your forms and CRM.

Join them on dates and landing pages, not on an assumed cause. A rise in citations followed by a rise in AI referrals is worth reporting as two observations; it does not prove one caused the other. The guide to AI visibility ROI covers how to connect these records to revenue without overstating the link.

Decision matrix

Use this matrix to choose a starting route. The ratings describe the route in general; check each vendor against its own documentation.

Need Provider Capture Platform
App match Lower Higher Varies
Raw text Yes Yes Varies
Control Full Partial Limited
Build effort High Medium Low
Terms Clear Ask Ask
Fixed cost Partial Yes Plan

Three patterns cover most teams:

  • A data team with a warehouse and its own analysts: start with provider APIs for control, then add an answer-capture API for the engines where the parity test shows a large gap.
  • A marketing team without engineers: use a platform, and check whether its export gives response-level rows or only aggregates before you commit.
  • An agency reporting for several clients: a platform API with response-level data, so every client figure can be traced to an answer.

If you are still deciding whether you need monitoring at all, an AI visibility audit gives a one-time baseline you can run by hand before any API work. If the goal is to track brand mentions in AI search alongside citations, sentiment and indirect signals, that guide compares the methods an API would sit beside.

When to hand the work to someone else

Collection is the easy part. The work that changes answers, such as publishing the proof answers cite, earning third-party coverage and fixing inaccurate descriptions, still has to be done after the data arrives.

Percepture's generative engine optimization services combine enterprise SEO, digital PR, schema engineering and AI visibility tracking, for teams that want monitoring and the follow-up work run together. Pyra's AI visibility case study describes mapping buyer questions and building answer-first pages for a digital infrastructure firm, and reports a lift in AI visibility signals; that is the company's own reported result for one client, not a forecast. Teams that want to automate steps after monitoring, such as content briefs or prospect research, can review Pyra's AI agents for marketing and sales. Percepture and Pyra are both commercially connected to Prime AI Visibility.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Saving answers without conditions. Without the model, search setting, location and sample number, a month-on-month change cannot be explained.
  • Treating one call as the answer. Generated answers vary between runs. Keep each sample rather than averaging into a figure more precise than the data.
  • Mixing routes in one trend line. An API answer and an interface capture are different measurements. Report them separately or label the switch.
  • Dropping failed calls. A missing answer is not a zero and not a success. Record it as missing.
  • Reading causes into citations. A cited page shows what an answer displayed, not why the engine chose it.
  • Buying aggregates when you need audits. If anyone will ask "show me the answer behind this number", you need response-level data.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI search monitoring API?

It is an interface that lets your own software collect AI answers about your brand on a schedule. It can be a provider's model API with a web search tool, an answer-capture API that returns what the consumer product shows, or a tracking platform's export API.

Can I monitor ChatGPT through the OpenAI API?

Yes, with limits. OpenAI documents a web search tool in the Responses API and a search model in Chat Completions that returns cited sources, but an API answer can differ from what a person sees in the ChatGPT app. Run a parity test on your own questions before relying on it.

Is there an API for Google AI Overviews?

Google's Gemini API offers grounding with Google Search, which returns a Gemini answer rather than the AI Overview on a results page. Third-party services such as SerpApi and cloro offer separate endpoints for AI Overviews and AI Mode results.

How many samples should each question get?

Start with three samples per question per run for questions that matter commercially and one for the rest. Measure how much the consumer app varies between runs, then adjust the sample count to that level of variation.

Does Prime AI Visibility have an API?

Prime AI's pricing and features pages list PDF and CSV exports of saved answers and sources, which use no credits, rather than a developer API. A team that needs automated delivery into a warehouse would have to move export files or use a route with an API.

Can an AI search monitoring API measure traffic or revenue?

No answer record contains clicks or revenue. Referral comes from your analytics and conversion from your CRM, so join those records to the saved answers by date and landing page.
