Free Claude rank tracking tools fall into three groups: a free Claude account run by hand, one-shot checkers from vendors, and time-boxed trials of paid trackers. None reports a rank, because Claude returns an answer, not a ranked list. What you can measure for free is whether Claude names your brand, links your site, and lists which sources it showed, for questions you chose.

Free Claude rank tracking tools: the short answer

  1. The free Claude account is the most controllable free option. You choose the questions, you see the full answer with its citations, and you keep everything. The cost is your time and a usage window that resets every five hours.
  2. One-shot checkers and trials trade control for speed. A vendor's free check is fast, but you usually cannot verify which prompts it ran or how it read the answer, and there is no history unless you save the report yourself.
  3. Free Prime access does not include Claude. Prime AI Visibility's free Flash plan checks ChatGPT only. Claude starts on the Growth plan. This page is published by Prime, and that limitation is stated again where it matters.

Which Claude rank tracking do you mean?

Two different questions hide behind this search. On 24 September 2026, in a signed-out English-language Google session, the results for the query mixed them: on the Web tab, a YouTube video and a Reddit thread in the first six results were about using Claude to write a free Google rank tracker, the main results page filled its discussions module with two more threads of that kind, and the remaining results were about checking whether Claude mentions a brand.

This page covers the second meaning: measuring how your brand appears inside Claude's answers. If you want Claude to help you build a classic keyword position checker for Google, that is a coding task, and a normal rank tracker measures that surface better than anything on this page.

Even in the second meaning, "rank" is loose language. Claude does not publish a numbered position for brands. What an answer exposes is observable and countable:

  • whether the brand is named at all;
  • whether a link to your website appears;
  • which source links the answer displayed, and in what order;
  • whether the answer recommends you, rather than merely listing you;
  • which competitors appear beside you;
  • if the answer is a list, where you sit in it.

Those six observations are what every method below, free or paid, is really collecting. Prime AI Visibility's published metric definitions use four of them by name: Brand named, Website cited, Source links and Explicit recommendation.

What a free method has to capture before it counts

The brief for any free method is the same as for a paid one. If a method cannot do these seven things, it is producing a number you cannot defend later.

  1. Prompt control. You choose the exact questions, and the wording stays frozen between runs. Jargon note: a prompt is just the question you type.
  2. Answer capture. The full answer text is stored, not a summary, a score or a screenshot of the top half.
  3. Mentions. Brand named is recorded as a yes or no, separately from links.
  4. Citations. Website cited is recorded when the answer links to a page on your domain.
  5. Source links. Every link the answer displayed is listed, including links to other sites.
  6. History. Last month's answers remain readable next to this month's.
  7. Limits. The method states plainly how many questions, how often, and what stops working when the limit is hit.

The free routes, compared on 24 September 2026

Method note, dated 24 September 2026: this comparison rates free Claude rank tracking tools by method, meaning ways of collecting Claude evidence without paying, not named products, because free tiers change without notice and can only be confirmed by using them. Ratings are words, not scores. Where a rating depends on the vendor, it says "verify", meaning test it before you rely on it. The reading of public vendor pages that informed the table is listed in the next section. Prime AI Visibility publishes this page; its own free plan does not cover Claude, which is disclosed below.

Criterion Free Claude account, by hand One-shot free checkers Free trials and free plans
Prompt control strong verify strong
Answer capture strong verify verify
Mentions strong verify verify
Citations strong verify verify
Source links strong verify verify
History partial none partial
Limits partial strong verify

Notes on the ratings. The free Claude account rates strong on everything you can see, because Anthropic's help center states that when Claude searches the web, every response includes citations, with source links and, when appropriate, quotes, and you are reading the whole answer yourself. It rates partial on history because history depends on you pasting each answer into a sheet, and partial on limits because Anthropic publishes the shape of the limit (usage resets every five hours, and web search counts toward it) but not a fixed number of questions.

One-shot checkers rate strong on limits because the limit is obvious: one check. They rate none on history because a one-off report has no next month unless you save it. Everything else is "verify", because the pages we read did not state which prompts were run, whether web search was on, or whether the full answer was retained.

Free trials and free plans rate strong on prompt control because you enter your own questions, partial on history because the record usually ends when the trial does, and "verify" on limits because caps are set in days or credits that differ by vendor. Export the answers before the trial ends; a trial you cannot export from was a demo.

A budget route sits outside the table because it is not free: the Claude API with the web search tool. Anthropic's pricing page lists web search at $10 per 1,000 searches plus standard token costs, and the tool's documentation states that responses include citations with the source URL. One search is one cent before tokens, and a single question can trigger more than one search, which is why the tool has a maximum-uses parameter. It is also the route Anthropic's Consumer Terms document for automated access, which matters for history, and it comes back later in this article.

Whichever route you take, treat the first month's numbers as a baseline, not a verdict. Our page on tracking AI visibility by hand versus with a platform sets out where hand collection stops being enough for any engine; the Claude-specific version of that limit is the usage window.

What public pages said about free Claude checks on 24 September 2026

A search for the best free Claude rank tracker returns a small set of vendor pages. Here is what each publicly stated on the date we read it. This is a reading of public pages, not a trial, not a ranking and not an endorsement.

  • Cognizo, the first organic result in our capture, answers its own question "Is there a free Claude rank tracker?" by stating that free plans or trials exist but typically show only visibility data, and that free plans "may not even include Claude, since most free plans only support ChatGPT". That matches Prime's own free plan, described below.
  • Geoptie publishes a page titled "Free Claude Rank Tracker" that checks whether Claude mentions a brand, answers "Is this Claude rank tracker free?" with "Yes", and invites readers who want continuous tracking to "move beyond one-off checks". The page does not state whether web search was on or whether the full answer is shown.
  • AI Rank Lab states on its home page that a free plan is included, with 100 credits on signup and no credit card required. The page does not state what one Claude check costs in credits.
  • Cairrot has a page titled "Claude Rank Tracker" that offers a free trial and free first-time access to Claude visibility metrics. The page does not state the collection method.
  • Prime AI Visibility, the publisher of this page, lists Flash as free with up to 5 questions in one monthly check, ChatGPT only, no payment card. Claude is available on Growth, Agency and Enterprise, and one question in Claude uses 3 credits.

One of these pages also displays outcome figures for citation and traffic growth. We did not verify them and this page does not repeat them. For any one-shot checker, ask five questions before you rely on its score: who chose the prompts, was web search on, can you read the full answer, are all source links listed, and can you rerun the same prompts next month. Our guide on how to judge an AEO checker before you rely on its score walks through the same questions for other engines.

Where the free Claude account is enough

For a brand with ten to fifteen buyer questions and a monthly cadence, the free Claude account plus a spreadsheet is a legitimate measurement method, not a stopgap. Anthropic's pricing page lists the Free plan at $0 with web search, file creation, code execution and memory across conversations. Four points from Anthropic's help center and pricing page shape how you should use it for measurement:

  • Memory across conversations is a listed Free-plan feature, and incognito chats bypass it. Incognito chats are available on the Free plan, are not saved to your chat history or to Claude's memory, and do not draw on existing memory. Run every measurement prompt in a fresh incognito chat, so last week's conversation about your own brand cannot leak into this week's answer. The help center also notes that in the new Claude experience an incognito chat opens in the previous chat interface, so check whether a web search toggle is present there and record its state.
  • Web search may have no toggle. In the new Claude experience there is no web search toggle; Claude searches the web "when it helps". The help center says you can write "Search the web" in the prompt to make search likely, or instruct Claude not to search. Record which you did, because an answer with sources and an answer from memory are different measurements.
  • Location can change the answer. Claude may use a location inferred from your IP address for localized results. Note the country you ran from.
  • The limit is a rolling window, not a monthly quota. Free usage resets every five hours, and web search and web fetch count against it. Anthropic does not publish a fixed question count for the Free plan, so a twenty-prompt run may need to be split across two windows.

One rule is not optional. Anthropic's Consumer Terms prohibit accessing the consumer service through automated means, and prohibit crawling or scraping it, except through an API key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it. A free account is a manual instrument. If you want a script, use the API route below.

A manual spreadsheet workflow when no free tool is adequate

When no free checker lets you control the prompts and read the whole answer, build the record yourself. The sheet below is deliberately narrow. It captures the seven criteria and nothing else, and it takes about ninety minutes a month for ten questions run twice.

Column What to record
Question Exact wording, frozen; version it if you must change it
Run Date, time, country, and whether the chat was incognito
Search state Whether Claude showed the searching indicator and displayed sources
Full answer The complete text, pasted, not summarized
Brand named Yes or no
Website cited Yes or no, plus the exact URL
Source links Every displayed link, in order, including other sites
Explicit recommendation Yes only when the answer clearly recommends you
Competitors named Every rival brand in the answer
List position Your position if the answer is a list; blank otherwise
Notes Refusals, follow-up questions Claude asked, anything odd

The run protocol matters more than the columns:

  1. Write ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing a product in your category. Mix discovery ("best tools for X"), comparison ("A vs B for Y") and use-case questions.
  2. Open an incognito chat for each question. Paste the question, add nothing else, and copy the whole answer into the sheet the moment it finishes.
  3. Run the set twice in the same week. Claude's answers vary between runs, and two runs show you how much before you read anything into a change.
  4. Never overwrite a row. Next month adds rows; it does not edit them.
  5. Compute rates against usable answers, not against questions asked.

The formulas borrow the requested, returned, usable and missing vocabulary from Prime's metrics page, because it makes the small-sample problem visible. The sheet's working definition of usable, an on-topic answer, is a manual convention for this workflow, not a metric label from that page.

requested = questions x runs
returned  = answers received
usable    = on-topic answers
missing   = requested - returned

Brand named rate
  = answers naming the brand
  / usable

Website cited rate
  = answers linking your site
  / usable

Recommendation rate
  = answers recommending you
  / usable

A worked example with a fictional brand. Ledgerline, an invoicing app, runs ten questions twice in the last week of the month: 20 requested. One run hit the usage window mid-answer and produced nothing, so 19 returned. Of those, one answer refused the question as too vague, so 18 are usable; a refusal is a returned answer, just not a usable one. Ledgerline is named in 6 answers, linked in 3, and explicitly recommended in 2. Brand named rate is 6/18, or 33 percent; Website cited rate is 3/18, or 17 percent; Recommendation rate is 2/18, or 11 percent. Two competitors appear in 12 and 9 answers respectively. With 18 usable answers, a single answer moves any rate by about 5.6 points, so a shift from 33 to 39 percent next month is one answer, not a trend. Our editorial rule of thumb, not a statistical law, is that three months of rows is the earliest point at which a movement deserves a sentence in a report.

If you want the fuller Claude-specific version of this ledger, with nine metrics and confidence labels, our guide on measuring brand visibility in Claude has it, and the Claude repeatability protocol covers run counts and search state in more depth. To turn these counts into a share against competitors, the AI search share of voice measurement guide explains the two formulas that circulate under one name.

The budget route: the Claude API with web search

The Claude API is the one route that gives you history without a person pasting answers, and it is cheap rather than free. Facts from Anthropic's published documentation, read on 24 September 2026:

  • The web search tool is billed at $10 per 1,000 searches plus standard token costs; each search counts as one use regardless of how many results it returns, and a search that errors is not billed.
  • Responses carry web search citations with the URL, the page title and up to 150 characters of cited text, so Source links can be recorded programmatically rather than by eye.
  • You can cap searches per request with a maximum-uses parameter, restrict or exclude domains, and pass a user location so results are localized on purpose instead of by accident.
  • Anthropic's Consumer Terms prohibit automated access to the consumer service except through an API key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it, so scripted collection belongs here, under the API's own terms, not in the app.

Two limits keep this honest. First, an API answer is not a consumer-app answer: the app has its own instructions, memory and interface, so treat API observations as a related measurement, not a replay of what a buyer saw. Prime's own metrics page makes the same point about its collection. Second, the search fee is the small and uncertain part: Claude may run several searches for one question, token costs depend on the model you pick and on how much retrieved text Claude reads, and Anthropic counts retrieved search results as input tokens. Run five questions once, read the search count and token usage reported in the response, and price the monthly run from that, not from the number of questions.

Is there a best free Claude rank tracker?

No reproducible method supports calling one product the best free Claude rank tracker, and this page does not try. The free Claude rank tracking tools above are not comparable on equal terms: one gives you a single report on prompts you did not choose, another gives you a time-boxed trial of a full product, a third gives you an account with credits and no card. What you can do is match the route to your situation:

  • Ten or fewer questions, monthly, one engine. Free Claude account, incognito chats, the spreadsheet above. Cost: about ninety minutes a month.
  • You need to show history to someone else. Add the API route for the same ten questions, store the JSON, and keep the spreadsheet as the human-readable layer.
  • You want a quick outside read before committing time. Use a one-shot checker, but save the report, note the date, and do not compare its score with your own counts, because its prompts and denominator are not yours.
  • You are evaluating paid trackers anyway. Use the trial as a trial: load your frozen ten questions, confirm Claude is on the plan you would actually buy, and export before it ends. Our evidence-and-fit comparison of Claude rank trackers sets out what to check in that evaluation.
  • You need Claude beside four other engines on a schedule. That is a paid job on every platform we read, including Prime.

Where Prime AI Visibility fits, and where it does not

Disclosure: Prime AI Visibility publishes this page. Its free Flash plan is not a free Claude rank tracking tool. Flash allows up to 5 questions in one completed monthly check, on ChatGPT only, with no payment card. Claude is not available on Flash or on Starter. It is available on Growth, Agency and Enterprise, and one question in Claude uses 3 credits from the plan's monthly balance. The full table is on the pricing page, which also lists what each plan includes and the current credit costs.

What the paid plans add to the workflow above is the part the spreadsheet cannot do for you: the same saved question set runs on a monthly schedule by default, the returned answers are kept, and each report states requested, returned, usable and missing answers with Brand named, Website cited, Source links and Explicit recommendation counted separately. Prime does not report a rank, does not estimate AI traffic, and does not claim that a content change caused a movement between checks. Its observations are API-based and can differ from what a person sees in the consumer app, exactly as the API route above can.

If you are starting with Claude on a budget, the honest sequence is: run the free workflow for a month, decide whether the answers change your decisions, and only then pay anyone, Prime included, to run it for you.

Methodology and sources

This page was authored by Bob Generale; the measurement and product claims were reviewed by Alex Mannine. Research was completed on 24 September 2026. We read the Google Web results for the query in a signed-out English-language session (the AI Overview slot was present but did not finish rendering in our capture, People Also Ask was not captured, and result positions vary by location and personalisation), ran the query through Gemini 2.5 Flash with Google Search grounding to see which pages it displayed, and read the vendor pages named above on that date. Product facts about Claude come from Anthropic's help center, pricing pages, API documentation and Consumer Terms as published on that date. Product facts about Prime come from its live pricing and metrics pages. We did not run trials of the vendor products, and the ratings table rates methods rather than products for that reason. Free plans, prices and limits change; the dates above are the boundary of what this page can vouch for.

Next steps

  1. Compare paid Claude rank trackers on evidence and fit when the free workflow has shown you which questions matter.
  2. Read Prime's metric definitions so your spreadsheet columns and any future tool report count the same things.
  3. When you are ready, create a Prime AI Visibility workspace with the same ten questions; Flash covers ChatGPT free, and Claude joins the set on Growth.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Claude rank tracker?

There is no free tool that reports a Claude rank, because Claude returns answers rather than ranked positions. Free Claude rank tracking tools, in the loose sense, exist in three forms: a free Claude account used by hand, one-shot checkers from vendors, and trials of paid trackers. Each can tell you whether Claude names or links your brand for a question; the hand-run account is the free route that reliably gives you full control of the prompts and the full answer at no cost.

Does Prime AI Visibility's free plan include Claude?

No. The free Flash plan checks ChatGPT only, with up to 5 questions in one completed monthly check and no payment card. Claude is available on the Growth, Agency and Enterprise plans, and one question in Claude uses 3 credits. Prime publishes this page, and its pricing page lists the current plans.

Can I automate checks on a free Claude account?

No. Anthropic's Consumer Terms prohibit accessing the consumer service through automated means, and prohibit crawling or scraping it, except through an API key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it. Automation belongs on the Claude API, where the web search tool is billed at $10 per 1,000 searches plus token costs and returns citations you can store.

How many questions can I run on Claude's free plan?

Anthropic does not publish a fixed number. The Free plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window, and web search and web fetch count toward them. In practice a ten-question set run twice may need to be split across two windows; record the time of each run so the split is visible in your sheet.

Does Claude show its sources?

When Claude searches the web, Anthropic's help center states that every response includes citations, with source links and, when appropriate, quotes. In the new Claude experience there is no web search toggle, and Claude searches the web when it helps, so write "Search the web" in the prompt when you want sources and record whether the searching indicator appeared.

What is the best free Claude rank tracker tool for a small brand?

For a small brand with ten or so buyer questions, the most defensible free option is a free Claude account run in incognito chats with the spreadsheet workflow on this page, because it is the free route that reliably lets you control the prompts, read the whole answer and keep every source link. No reproducible method supports naming one vendor's free tier as best, and this page does not.

Keep the spreadsheet, add the schedule when it pays

Flash is free for ChatGPT with no card and no Claude access. When your Claude questions need to run every month without your afternoon, Growth adds Claude and Gemini to the same saved question set, with answers kept for comparison.
