Best AEO Checkers: How to Evaluate an AI Answer Visibility Check

The best AEO checkers are diagnostics, not verdicts. An AEO check shows whether AI answer engines can read your pages and whether their answers currently name, cite or recommend your brand for a small set of buyer questions. Judge any checker on prompt control, engine coverage, saved answers, citation evidence and reproducibility, not on a single score.
Best AEO checkers: the short answer
- An AEO checker is a diagnostic, not a verdict. It tells you what an engine could read, or what an answer contained on one day. It cannot promise a citation, and no honest one claims to.
- Two different tools hide behind one name. Page-readiness checkers grade your page against a vendor rubric. Answer-presence checkers ask an engine a question and record whether your brand appeared. You usually need both, and you should never mistake one for the other.
- The record matters more than the score. The best AEO checkers keep the exact question, engine, date and full answer, and mark Brand named, Website cited and Explicit recommendation separately.
- A free check is a fair place to start. Five buyer questions in one engine, saved word for word, beat a 90 out of 100 badge you cannot explain.
- Reproducibility is the buying criterion. If you cannot rerun the same check next month under the same settings, you have a screenshot, not a measurement.
What is an AEO checker, and what does an AEO check test?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of getting your content understood and used by AI systems that answer questions directly, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. On this site we usually say GEO for the same discipline. The label changes; the job does not.
An AEO check is a one-time or lightweight look at where you stand. It usually answers one of two questions:
- Can the engines read and understand my pages? This is a page-readiness check. You give the tool a URL, it inspects things like crawler access, structured data, headings, direct-answer paragraphs and freshness, and it returns a score.
- Do the engines currently name, cite or recommend my brand when buyers ask? This is an answer-presence check. You give the tool a question, it runs that question in one or more engines, and it records what came back.
Most products sold as the best AEO checkers do one of these well and gesture at the other. Some vendor pages describe the first kind plainly: CheckAEO scores a URL, pasted HTML or plain text across six categories into a weighted 0 to 100 score, and its own page states that no tool can promise citations (checked September 23, 2026). Others describe live prompting: aeochecker.ai lists ten AI engines on its home page and reports an AEO Score alongside an AI Mention Rate. The two families answer different questions, so a buyer needs to know which question they are asking before comparing anyone's scores.
This page is about the lightweight check: what it can tell you, how to compare the options, and what to record. If you need the full process, with a frozen prompt set, competitor benchmarks and a re-audit cadence, read the guide to running a complete AI visibility audit. If you are choosing a platform for ongoing tracking rather than a single check, the rubric for choosing an AI visibility tool covers vendor evaluation in depth. Here we stay on the one-afternoon check.
Is an AEO score the same as being cited by an AI engine?
No. A page-readiness score is a vendor's opinion about signals the vendor chose. Each checker weights its own rubric, and none of the engines publish a scoring function that a checker could copy. Google's documentation for AI features in Search says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that "there are no additional technical requirements." The same page notes that AI Overviews are shown only when Google's systems decide they add to classic Search and "often don't trigger." Neither statement gives anyone a formula to grade against.
That does not make page scores useless. Crawler access, structured data that matches the visible text, clear headings and a direct answer paragraph are worth checking because they are things you control, and because Google recommends the same foundational practices for its AI features that it recommends for Search overall. Read the score as a checklist of your own housekeeping, not as a prediction.
An answer-presence result has the opposite limit. It is real evidence of what one engine showed on one day, in one session, under one set of settings. Engines vary their answers with model updates, location, conversation history and, in some products, personal memory. A single run proves that an answer happened. It does not prove that the next user will see the same thing, and it never proves why the engine chose those sources. A link in an answer is observed evidence, not a window into a model's reasoning. Prime AI Visibility's published definitions for Brand named, Website cited and Source links draw exactly that line, and any checker you pay for should too.
Can you run an AEO check yourself for free?
Yes, and you should do it once before you buy anything, because the manual version teaches you what a good tool has to automate. It takes about an hour for five questions.
Step 1: check crawler access. Open your robots.txt and look for rules that block the fetchers the engines document. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, GPTBot crawls content that may be used for training, and ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user asks a question, where robots.txt rules may not apply. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for surfacing and linking sites in its results and Perplexity-User for user-requested fetches. Anthropic documents ClaudeBot for training collection, Claude-SearchBot for search quality and Claude-User for user-initiated access. Google says robots.txt directives for Googlebot are the control for Search, including its AI features, and that Google-Extended manages Gemini training and grounding without affecting Search inclusion or ranking. A block on the wrong token is the cheapest AEO problem to find and the most common one to miss. Our guide to which AI crawlers appear in your logs and what each one is for walks through the full list.
Step 2: write five buyer questions. Use the questions a buyer asks before they know your name: "best payroll software for a 20-person restaurant," not "is Harborline Payroll good." Freeze the wording.
Step 3: ask each question in a fresh session. Use a logged-out or new session where the product allows it. Note the date, the engine, the model name if the interface shows it, and your location. Run each question once in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and once in Google to see whether an AI Overview appears.
Step 4: save the whole answer. Copy the full text and every source link into a sheet. A screenshot is a fallback, not a record, because you cannot search it later.
Step 5: mark three things per answer. Was your brand named? Was your website linked? Did the answer explicitly recommend you? Count the total number of source links too, and list any competitor names that appeared.
The free checkers on the market compress some of this into one click. The trade is control: most take a URL rather than a question, most run a fixed set of prompts you cannot see, and most show a score rather than the saved answers. That can be fine for a first look. It is not fine as the thing you report to a client or a board.
How do the three kinds of AEO check compare?
Any list of the best AEO checkers should be read against fixed criteria, so the table below rates each approach in words against nine fixed criteria; the buyer checklist later on this page turns the same criteria into eleven yes-or-no questions. Inventing precise scores would repeat the exact mistake this page warns about. "Platform check" means a defined check inside a dedicated AI visibility product, including Prime AI Visibility, which publishes this page.
| Criterion | Quick manual check | Free one-click checker | Platform check or audit workflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt control | Strong: you write and freeze the questions | None to partial: fixed or hidden prompts, often URL input only | Strong: a saved question set you choose |
| Engine coverage | Strong but slow: any engine you can open | Partial: whatever the vendor's page lists | Strong: engines documented per plan |
| Exact-answer retention | Strong if you copy it; none if you screenshot | None to partial: usually a score, sometimes a summary | Strong: full answers saved per run |
| Citations | Partial: you log links by hand | Partial: some show sources, many do not | Strong: source links recorded per answer |
| Brand mentions | Strong: you read every answer | Partial: a mention flag without context | Strong: Brand named kept separate from Website cited |
| Competitor context | Partial: only the names you notice | Partial to none: rarely shown per answer | Strong: competitors listed per answer |
| Reproducibility | Weak: settings drift between sessions | Weak: prompts and dates not disclosed | Strong: same set, same tools, dated runs |
| Pricing transparency | Free, paid for in your time | Free first look; upsell terms vary | Partial to strong: check the public price page |
| Exportability | Strong: it is already your sheet | Weak: often a PDF or a badge | Strong when CSV or PDF export is included |
Two notes on the middle column. First, "free" often means free for the first URL, with the full report behind an email address or a trial. CheckAEO's page says a URL score needs no account and that whole-site scans and unlimited re-runs come with its separate AEO Deep Dive. Otterly.AI's checker page pairs an on-page audit of "20+ on-page factors" with a free trial that requires no credit card (both checked September 23, 2026). Second, a checker that lists ten engines is not automatically better than one that lists three. Ask whether it shows you the answer from each engine or a blended score.
The right-hand column is where the market is moving, and the most important question there is what an honest tracker should report. Our page on what an AI search tracker should report before you compare vendors lists per-engine results, flexible refresh, saved evidence and stated limits. If you want a direct feature and price table, the Prime AI Visibility comparison with Peec AI, Profound and Otterly.AI shows what each vendor's public pricing page said on the checked date and marks everything else as not listed.
What should an AEO check record before you trust it?
Whatever tool you use, the output should let a colleague rerun the check and get a comparable result. That means the record needs these fields for every answer:
- The exact question. Not a topic, the wording.
- Engine, date and settings. Which product, the model name where shown, logged in or out, region, and whether web search or browsing was on. If the check involves a Google surface, note whether you looked at a live AI Overview or a Google-grounded preview; Prime AI Visibility labels its Google tool an AI Overview-style preview for exactly this reason.
- The full answer text. Every later decision depends on rereading it.
- Brand named. Did the answer name the brand or an approved variant?
- Website cited. Did it link to at least one page on your site?
- Source links. The count of all citation links in the answer, from any site, kept separate from the owned-link question above.
- Explicit recommendation. Did the answer tell the reader to choose you? Naming or linking alone does not count.
- Competitors present. Every other brand named, so the check has context.
These are the same distinctions Prime AI Visibility reports as Visible in AI answers, Brand named, Website cited, Source links and Explicit recommendation. A checker that folds them into one number has thrown away the information you needed.
A worked example: one afternoon, five questions, three engines
The numbers below are illustrative and the brand is fictional. Harborline Payroll, a small payroll product for restaurants, runs five unbranded buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on one afternoon, in fresh sessions, and saves every answer. Fifteen answers come back.
| Result across 15 answers | Harborline Payroll | Competitor A | Competitor B |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand named | 4 | 9 | 6 |
| Website cited | 1 | 6 | 2 |
| Explicit recommendation | 0 | 3 | 1 |
Source links across all 15 answers: 41, of which 1 pointed at Harborline's site.
What this AEO check does tell the team: Competitor A was named in more than twice as many answers and linked in six times as many; Harborline was named without a link in three answers; no engine recommended Harborline outright. What it does not tell them: why. The team can form hypotheses, for example that the three unlinked mentions came from third-party comparison pages that describe Harborline but do not link to it, or that Harborline's pricing page is blocked to one of the search fetchers. Each hypothesis is something to check and then remeasure, not a conclusion to publish.
The check also shows the limit of one afternoon. Fifteen answers is a thin sample, and one extra mention moves Harborline's count by a quarter. That is why the same check, rerun monthly with the same questions and settings, is worth more than a larger one-off. Prime AI Visibility calls a fair rerun Comparable change: a comparison using a sufficiently aligned question set, tools, persona, market and measurement method. The wording matters because it forbids the most common cheat, which is changing the questions until the number improves.
Buyer checklist: how to compare the best AEO checkers
Print this and score each option yes or no. A tool that fails the first three questions is a badge generator, whatever its marketing says.
- Can I write, or at least see, the exact questions it runs?
- Does it document which engines it checks, and does it show each engine's answer separately?
- Does it keep the full answer text, not just a score?
- Does it record the date, engine and settings of each run?
- Does it mark Brand named, Website cited and Explicit recommendation as separate facts?
- Does it count source links and show where they point?
- Does it list the competitors that appeared in each answer?
- Can I rerun the identical check later and compare results?
- Is the price public, including what the free tier does and does not include?
- Can I export the records as CSV or PDF, and is export free?
- Does the vendor state that it cannot explain or promise engine behaviour?
Question 11 sounds odd on a buying checklist, but it is the fastest honesty test. Engines do not publish how they select sources. A checker that claims to reveal why you were not cited, or promises a citation after a fix, is selling inference as fact.
When is a lightweight AEO check enough, and when do you need more?
A one-time check is enough when you need a first read, a sanity check before a pitch, or a look at one campaign page before launch. It is enough when the decision it informs is small: fix the robots.txt rule, add the missing direct-answer paragraph, brief the writer.
It stops being enough the moment someone asks "is it getting better?" Trends need the same questions, the same engines and the same settings on a schedule. Executive reporting needs saved evidence, not recollection. Competitor benchmarking needs a named competitor set measured on the same days. At that point, graduate the spreadsheet into the step-by-step audit that turns buyer prompts into a dated baseline, or into a platform.
If you want to try the platform version of a lightweight check without a commitment, Prime AI Visibility's Flash plan runs up to five questions in ChatGPT as one completed check per month, with no payment card. Starter, at $69 per month, adds Perplexity and a Google AI Overview-style preview; Growth, at $179 per month, adds Claude and Gemini for all five tools. Saved PDF and CSV exports cost no credits. Those figures come from the current plan and credit table as published on September 23, 2026, and they will change before this page does, so check the live page.
Methodology and sources
This page was written by Bob Generale; methodology reviewed by Alex Mannine. The comparison criteria were fixed before any vendor page was read: prompt control, engine coverage, exact-answer retention, citations, brand mentions, competitor context, reproducibility, pricing transparency and exportability. We compared approaches against those criteria rather than ranking the best AEO checkers by opinion. Vendor statements about CheckAEO, aeochecker.ai and Otterly.AI are taken from those companies' public pages on September 23, 2026, and are limited to what those pages said; we did not run paid tiers end to end. Statements about crawler behaviour come from the engines' own documentation, linked below. Prime AI Visibility publishes this page and sells a platform check, so treat the product references as a disclosed interest, and note that Prime cannot see or explain engine internals either.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AEO checker?
An AEO checker is a diagnostic that shows either how readable your pages are for AI answer engines or whether those engines currently name, cite or recommend your brand for specific questions. Some tools grade a URL against their own rubric; others run prompts and record answers. Neither type can promise a citation, because no engine publishes how it picks sources.
Is an AEO check the same as an AI visibility audit?
No. An AEO check is a one-time or lightweight look at a few questions or one page. An AI visibility audit freezes a full prompt set, names a competitor set, runs every engine on the same dates and sets a baseline for repeat measurement. The check is the first hour; the audit is the program.
What does an AEO score measure?
A page-readiness score measures signals the vendor selected, such as crawler access, structured data, heading structure and direct-answer paragraphs, weighted by the vendor's own formula. It is a housekeeping checklist, not a prediction. Treat a high score as "nothing obvious is blocking the engines," not as "the engines will cite this page."
How do I do an AEO check for free?
Check your robots.txt for blocks on the documented fetchers, write five unbranded buyer questions, ask each in a fresh session in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and check whether Google shows an AI Overview. Save every full answer and mark Brand named, Website cited and Explicit recommendation separately. Prime AI Visibility's Flash plan automates the ChatGPT part for up to five questions with no card.
Do the best AEO checkers cover every AI engine?
No single tool covers every engine, and a long engine list is not the same as showing each engine's answer. Ask for per-engine results, the date and settings of each run and the saved answer text. Prime AI Visibility currently supports ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and a Google AI Overview-style preview, with the tools available depending on plan.
How often should I repeat an AEO check?
Once is enough for a first read. If you need to know whether anything changed, repeat the identical questions on the same engines with the same settings on a fixed schedule; monthly is a workable default for most brands. Change the question set rarely, record the change, and treat the next run as a new baseline.
Can an AEO checker tell me why an engine did not cite my site?
No. Engines do not document how they choose or weight sources, so any tool claiming to explain a missing citation is presenting a guess as a fact. A good checker helps you form hypotheses, such as a blocked fetcher or a page without a clear answer, that you fix and then remeasure on the next run.
Keep the check you just ran
