If you searched "profound vs ahrefs comparison", here is the summary. Profound is an AI search platform sold to enterprise teams through a free seven-day trial and custom-priced Enterprise packages. Ahrefs is an SEO platform with published prices that adds AI visibility through Brand Radar: a few tracked AI prompts in every paid plan, larger prompt packages from $50 a month, and an AI Visibility Index of pre-run prompts from $199 a month. Choose by job, not by label.

This comparison uses each company's pricing, product and methodology pages, plus the comparison page each publishes about the other, with prices and features as published in October 2026. Prime AI Visibility publishes this site, competes with both, and appears later with its own limitations.

Profound vs Ahrefs comparison: the short answer

  • Choose Profound if AI search is a program of its own, you want daily tracking on up to nine engines, prompt-demand research, AI crawler and referral analytics and agents in one contract, and you can buy through a sales process.
  • Choose Ahrefs if your team already runs SEO in Ahrefs, wants published monthly prices, and wants AI visibility beside keyword, backlink and site audit data. Ahrefs adds a lookup of any brand's AI visibility across its prompt index, which Profound's pricing page does not list.
  • Use both if you need Ahrefs' SEO toolkit and Profound's AI program. Profound's own comparison suggests this split; Ahrefs' comparison argues one subscription is enough.
  • On engines: Profound's Enterprise plan lists up to nine. Ahrefs lists six AI indexes and adds Claude for custom prompt tracking.
  • On prompts: each vendor's prompt and demand data is a modelled estimate built a different way, and each vendor's comparison page criticises the other's method.

Who the two companies are

Profound. Profound was founded in August 2024 and is headquartered in New York. In September 2026 it raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, which the New York Business Journal also reported. It sells Answer Engine Insights, Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics, Shopping, Agents and an orchestrating agent called AI Marketer, also known as Aim. Our review of Profound's AI visibility products covers each one.

Ahrefs. Ahrefs is an SEO software company that says it has been bootstrapped since 2011; Profound's comparison also describes it as self-funded and profitable. Its core tools are Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker. Brand Radar is its AI visibility product and can be bought on its own. Ahrefs also sells Letaido, an agent workspace, and an AI Content Helper in its Content Kit add-on.

Plans, prices and engines on the same checks

The table uses the same check for both vendors in each row, from each vendor's pricing and product pages.

Check Profound Ahrefs
Entry price Quote $129/month
Free option 7-day trial Free checker
AI engines Up to 9 6 plus Claude
Own prompts 50 on trial 5 to 20
Cadence Daily Daily to monthly
Brand lookup Not listed From $199/mo
Demand data Prompt Volumes Adjusted volume
Crawler data Yes Beta, free
SEO toolkit No Yes
API Enterprise From Lite

Notes:

  • Profound. The trial runs 50 prompts daily for seven days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, from a recommended prompt set that its pricing FAQ says cannot be customized, with no history, exports or API. Enterprise lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search.
  • Ahrefs. Lite is $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 a month (Enterprise requires an annual commitment); annual billing saves up to 17%. Tracked AI prompts are 5, 10 and 20 on the first three plans and from 83 on Enterprise, checked daily. Custom prompt packages are $50 (2,500 checks), $100 (7,000) and $250 (25,000) a month; one check is one prompt on one platform in one location, and Claude uses eight checks per update.
  • Ahrefs' indexes are Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and ChatGPT. Its pricing FAQ says it never runs discounts and points to a free plan with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access; there is also a free AI visibility checker.
  • "Brand lookup" means looking up any brand, including competitors, across prompts the vendor has already run, without adding them to a tracked list.

Ahrefs' pages are not fully consistent. The comparison page describes "6 AI indexes" in one place and "7 AI indexes" in another, and the index size appears as "481M+" on the comparison page and "479M+" on the pricing page. Profound's pages describe its prompt dataset as "2B+" in comparisons and "1.5 billion+" on the Prompt Volumes page.

Methodology note: this is a comparison of public specifications, not a measurement of accuracy or results. Where a vendor's pages disagree with each other, we say so rather than choosing the more favourable figure.

Two ways to watch AI answers: a tracked list or an index

This is the most practical difference between the products.

A tracked prompt list runs questions you choose on a schedule. Both vendors offer this. Profound runs prompts daily. Ahrefs lets you choose daily, weekly or monthly per platform, and every check counts against your allowance.

A prompt index is a large set of prompts the vendor has already run, which you can search for any brand. Ahrefs' AI Visibility Index is this kind of product. Ahrefs says index prompts are "modeled from real user searches in Ahrefs' keyword database", built from Google's People Also Ask questions and semantic fanout, run through the public web interfaces of each engine, retested monthly and reported on a 90-day window.

In our judgement, an index is useful for category research and competitor discovery, and a tracked list is what you use to watch a specific question change. A monthly index cannot show you whether a fix worked last week; a 20-prompt list cannot show you a category. Decide which job comes first.

Prompt data: what each demand figure is

Both vendors attach demand estimates to prompts, and each criticises the other's.

  • Profound. Its Prompt Volumes page says it licenses conversations from double-opt-in consumer panels, at "hundreds of millions of prompts per month", and applies statistical modelling to scale volumes "to reflect the full population". The trial includes five Prompt Volumes searches.
  • Ahrefs. Each prompt carries an "AI adjusted volume": its parent keyword's Google search volume, scaled by a platform-specific ratio that Ahrefs says is built from aggregated AI referral traffic. Ahrefs' methodology post calls Brand Radar metrics "directional indicators, not exact traffic counts".

Profound's comparison says Ahrefs' prompts are "search-informed proxies, not real AI conversation data". Ahrefs' comparison says Profound's volumes are "extrapolated from clickstream data" and "overinflated".

In our judgement, both are estimates. Profound's starts from panel conversations and models upward; Ahrefs' starts from search demand and scales it. Neither is a count of how often a question was asked in an AI assistant. Use either to decide which questions to track first, and ask each vendor how it validates its figures.

What each platform measures

Profound. Answer Engine Insights tracks how engines mention, rank and describe a brand, with share of voice, citation sources, sentiment and competitor comparison. Profound says it captures responses "directly from the consumer experience, not API outputs". Agent Analytics tracks AI crawler visits and AI-referred traffic through integrations with Akamai, AWS, Cloudflare, Fastly, Google Analytics, Google Cloud Platform, Netlify, Vercel and WordPress.

Ahrefs. Brand Radar reports AI mentions, citations, cited pages and the fanout queries an engine generates behind a prompt, and adds web, YouTube, TikTok and Reddit visibility. Web Analytics shows AI-referred visits and is free. Bot Analytics, free while in beta, shows AI crawler visits through Cloudflare Logpush or Worker, Vercel, Amazon CloudFront or Fastly.

The five AI visibility signals

Each signal moves on its own, so it helps to see which product covers which:

  1. Mention (the answer names the brand): both.
  2. Citation (the answer links your site or a source about you): both, through cited sources or cited pages.
  3. Recommendation (the answer suggests your brand over others): Profound reports rank and sentiment; Ahrefs reports mentions and share against competitors. Neither public page lists a metric that records an explicit recommendation, so read the answer text.
  4. Referral (someone clicks through): both, through Agent Analytics or Web Analytics.
  5. Conversion (the visit becomes a lead or sale): Profound's Agents can pull GA4 conversions and revenue. Ahrefs' Brand Radar and Web Analytics pages describe AI-referred traffic, not conversions. Confirm what reaches your CRM either way.

Agents and content

Profound. AI Marketer proposes ranked projects, and Agents carry them out. Agent templates cover content refresh, FAQ generation, competitive research and net-new content, with a human approval step before anything publishes. Agents run on credits; the trial includes limited credits.

Ahrefs. Letaido is an agent workspace with memory, saved skills, scheduled automations and integrations including Slack, Notion, HubSpot and WordPress; Ahrefs' comparison lists it at $99 a month with unlimited users. AI Content Helper, in the Content Kit add-on from $99 a month, benchmarks and improves individual pages.

In our judgement, the difference is who decides the work. Profound positions Aim as proposing what to do next from its AI search data. Ahrefs positions Letaido as running the workflows your team defines, over Ahrefs' SEO and Brand Radar data. Teams with a strong SEO process may prefer the second; teams building a new AI search program may value the first.

What each vendor's comparison page says about the other

This is the original analysis in this comparison. Profound publishes "Profound vs. Ahrefs for AI visibility" (dated May 20, 2026), and Ahrefs publishes "Ahrefs vs. Profound". The table checks claims each makes about the rival against the rival's own pages.

Claim Made by Rival's page says
Bot data via Cloudflare only Profound Four options
Claude on custom prompts only Profound Matches
Index retested monthly Profound Matches
$99 Agency Growth plan Ahrefs No price shown
You edit the prompt list Ahrefs Trial: fixed set
API on Enterprise only Ahrefs Matches

Notes, row by row:

  • Bot data via Cloudflare only. Profound's page calls Ahrefs' Bot Analytics "Cloudflare-only". Ahrefs' Bot Analytics page lists Cloudflare, Vercel, Amazon CloudFront and Fastly, though an FAQ on the same page still says it works "entirely via Cloudflare integration".
  • Claude on custom prompts only. Profound says Ahrefs tracks Claude only for custom prompts at a higher check cost. Ahrefs lists six indexes "plus Claude in Prompt Tracking", and Claude uses eight checks per update.
  • Index retested monthly. Profound says the index retests monthly on a 90-day window. Ahrefs' FAQ says the same.
  • $99 Agency Growth plan. Ahrefs' page says Profound's Agency Growth plan is $99 a month with 25 prompts. Profound's pricing page mentions a self-serve Agency Growth plan in its FAQ but shows no price for it.
  • You edit the prompt list. Ahrefs says Profound starts from a recommended list "that you then edit and add to". Profound's pricing FAQ says the trial's recommended set cannot be customized.
  • API on Enterprise only. Ahrefs says Profound's API is Enterprise-only, and Profound's pricing page agrees. Ahrefs lists API and MCP access from Lite.

Most published comparisons of these two platforms come from a company with a stake in the outcome. Both vendor pages may have been accurate when written, and plans change quickly, so confirm current plan details on each pricing page and treat any vendor's comparison, including this one, as a list of questions to confirm in a demo.

A side-by-side evaluation plan

Ahrefs has no trial, so plan the evaluation around Profound's seven days and the smallest Ahrefs plan or prompt package you would actually buy.

  1. Write your prompts first. List 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask, grouped by product and persona, and keep the exact text outside both tools.
  2. Look yourself up. Use Ahrefs' free AI visibility checker for a quick view of your brand, then note which of your prompts it shows.
  3. Compare the overlap. Profound's trial uses a recommended prompt set, so compare where your list overlaps with it.
  4. Fix the engines. Compare ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, which both cover at entry level.
  5. Save evidence. Screenshot five full answers with cited URLs in each tool, since Profound's trial has no exports.
  6. Count checks. On Ahrefs, multiply prompts by platforms, locations and updates a month, and remember Claude uses eight checks per update.
  7. Ask the same questions of both. Price for your prompt count, engines in your contract, history, exports and API, and who reviews agent output before it publishes.

The guide on how to choose an AI visibility tool explains each evaluation axis in more depth.

Who each platform fits

Profound is a likely fit for:

  • Enterprise brands and large agencies that want tracking, prompt research, AI traffic analytics and agents in one contract.
  • Teams that need DeepSeek or Exa Search coverage, or daily tracking on many engines in one contract.
  • Retailers that need ChatGPT Shopping visibility on Enterprise.

Ahrefs is a likely fit for:

  • SEO teams already working in Ahrefs that want AI visibility next to keyword, backlink and audit data.
  • Teams that want published prices, API access on lower plans and no sales process.
  • Researchers who want to look up competitors or a whole category across a large prompt index.

Weaker fit for either: teams that only need saved answer evidence for a small set of buyer questions and do not plan to use agents, an SEO suite or traffic analytics. For a wider shortlist, see our guide to AI visibility tools for B2B companies, or the AI visibility tools comparison of Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.AI.

Where Prime AI Visibility fits

Prime AI Visibility is an AI visibility tracker for teams that want to run a smaller set of saved buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview, then read every saved answer with the brands named and the links shown. It reports Brand named, Website cited, Source links and Explicit recommendation, each defined on the metrics page.

The Prime AI Visibility features include an AI Search Predictor that finds questions worth pursuing and a Content Studio that drafts source-enriched pages as files, with nothing published without approval. Flash is free each month for five questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, with up to 15 answers and no card. Starter is $69 a month for all five, and the pricing page lists every plan.

Limitations: Prime AI Visibility does not report sentiment, rank, AI crawler visits, traffic or conversions, so referral and conversion data must come from your analytics. It has no SEO toolkit or prompt index for looking up other brands. It checks monthly by default, with weekly, temporary daily and on-demand checks on paid plans, and does not track Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek or Google AI Mode.

When the next job is implementation

An AI visibility tool, whether Profound, Ahrefs or another, shows where a brand stands. Earning coverage on the publications, forums and review sites that answers cite, and fixing the site underneath, is still work for people. As an AI Visibility Platform for in-house teams, Prime AI Visibility stops at measurement, recommendations and draft files.

If you want a partner to do that work, Percepture, founded in 2004 and Inc. 5000-recognized, offers generative engine optimization services and enterprise SEO services within its wider digital marketing and PR services. Fit: a team that wants technical SEO, content and digital PR aimed at the sources AI answers cite, done by people. Limitation: Percepture is a services firm, not a tracking platform, so it pairs with a tool rather than replacing one. Prime AI Visibility has a commercial relationship with Percepture.

Teams with a large content backlog can also look at Pyra's AI agents for marketing and sales, which include human-approved content operations agents.

Whichever you choose, an AI Search Visibility Platform or an AI Brand Visibility Tool is only useful if it keeps the same questions from one month to the next, so changes are comparable.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for AI visibility, Profound or Ahrefs?

Neither is better for every team. Profound suits enterprise teams that want daily tracking on up to nine engines, prompt research, AI traffic analytics and agents in one custom contract. Ahrefs suits SEO teams that want published prices and AI visibility next to keyword, backlink and audit data, plus a lookup of any brand across its prompt index.

How much do Profound and Ahrefs cost for AI visibility?

Profound lists a free seven-day trial and custom-priced Enterprise packages. Ahrefs plans start at $129 a month with five tracked AI prompts, custom prompt packages start at $50 a month, and the AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month.

Which AI engines do Profound and Ahrefs cover?

Profound's Enterprise plan lists up to nine engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search. Ahrefs lists six AI indexes (Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and ChatGPT) and adds Claude for custom prompt tracking.

Is Ahrefs' prompt data the same as Profound's prompt volumes?

No. Ahrefs derives prompts from People Also Ask questions and its keyword database and scales Google search volume into an AI adjusted volume. Profound licenses panel conversations and models volumes upward. Both are estimates, not counts of questions asked in AI assistants.

Can you use Profound and Ahrefs together?

Yes. Profound's comparison suggests Ahrefs for SEO and Profound for AI search; Ahrefs' comparison argues one Ahrefs subscription covers both. Running both makes most sense when an SEO team already uses Ahrefs and a separate team runs an AI search program.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs' pricing FAQ says it never runs discounts and points to a free plan with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access. Ahrefs also offers a free AI visibility checker.

Next steps

  1. Write your 20 to 50 buyer prompts and run the evaluation plan above before either demo.
  2. Build the question list with an AI visibility audit so both tools are judged on fixed inputs.
  3. Keep a separate baseline: run your free check and compare the saved answers with each vendor's results.

Start a baseline before you choose

Ask five buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity at no cost and without a card, with up to 15 saved answers. Starter adds Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview for $69 a month.
