To track AI Mode brand visibility, write a fixed set of buyer questions, run each in a fresh AI Mode conversation under recorded conditions, save the full answer, and log whether your brand is named, whether your site is linked, which sources appear, how you are framed, and which competitors appear. Repeat monthly and compare like with like.

How to track AI Mode brand visibility: the short answer

  1. Control the input. AI Mode answers change with wording, account, location, device and time. The question set and the run conditions have to be frozen before the first answer counts.
  2. Record observations, not a rank. AI Mode returns a written answer with links, or sometimes a set of links on its own, not a numbered list of sites. The countable facts are mentions, links, source lists, framing and competitor presence.
  3. Compare only comparable runs. A change is worth reporting when the same questions, run the same way, produce a different record for more than one month. Prime AI Visibility publishes this page, and it does not track Google AI Mode; that limit is stated where it matters below.

AI Mode is not AI Overviews, and the difference changes the method

Google runs two generative surfaces in Search. An AI Overview is the summary block that appears at the top of some ordinary results pages. AI Mode is a separate tab and conversation view, reached from the tab bar or by asking in the "Ask anything" bar, where you can keep asking follow-up questions. Google's own documentation for site owners states that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary. Google's help page for AI Mode adds that it divides your question into subtopics and searches them at the same time, a technique Google calls query fan-out.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a record of AI Overviews is not a record of AI Mode, so any sheet or tool report should label which surface it captured. Second, because Google says AI Mode searches several subtopics behind one question, the wording of the question is part of the measurement. Freezing it removes a known source of variation, which is why the question set below is frozen word for word.

This page covers the how-to of measurement. If you are choosing a paid product, our evidence-and-fit review of AI Mode rank trackers covers the commercial question and names the vendors whose public documentation described AI Mode coverage when we read it.

What "visibility" means inside an AI Mode answer

An AI Mode answer can name a business, link to a page, recommend an option, describe it with a caveat, or leave it out. Each of those is a separate fact, and mixing them produces reports nobody can defend. The record on this page keeps six observations apart:

  • Brand named: your brand appears in the answer text, with or without a link.
  • Website cited: a link to a page on your domain appears in the answer or its source panel.
  • Source links: every link the answer displayed, to any site, in the order shown.
  • Explicit recommendation: the answer clearly recommends you, rather than listing you among options.
  • Framing: how you are described. This page uses five plain categories: recommended, listed, compared, cautioned, absent.
  • Competitors named: every rival brand in the same answer.

Four of these labels come straight from the definitions Prime publishes for its answer metrics, so a hand-built sheet and a later tool report can count the same things. If the whole idea of visibility inside an answer is new, our explainer on what AI search visibility is and why it matters covers why a rank cannot describe it.

Step 1: Build a controlled question set

Write ten to twenty questions a buyer would type before choosing something in your category, and write them the way a person types into AI Mode: full questions, not keywords. Mix three kinds:

  1. Discovery: "What are the best payroll tools for a ten-person company?"
  2. Comparison: "Is Brand A or Brand B better for contractors?"
  3. Use case: "Which payroll app handles multi-state employees?"

Include one or two questions that name your brand directly, but do not let them dominate. A set made only of branded questions measures whether Google knows you exist, not whether AI Mode suggests you to a stranger.

Then freeze the wording. Keep the questions in a versioned list, and if you must change one, retire the old row and start a new one rather than editing history. One phrase to fix early: "prompt" and "question" mean the same thing on this page, the text you type.

Step 2: Fix the run conditions and write them down

Google's public documentation lists several settings that change what AI Mode shows, and each one belongs in your record.

  • Account and personalization. Google's help page states that AI Mode personalization is available if you are 18 or older and have history and personalized recommendations enabled, and that connecting Google content apps such as Gmail, Calendar and Photos tailors responses further. Where AI Mode is available to you signed out, a signed-out session is the simplest clean condition. If you must sign in, use an account created for measurement with history and personalized recommendations turned off and no connected apps, and record that.
  • Location. Google's location help page states that your current location, estimated from a variety of sources, is used to give more helpful results. Record the country you ran from, and the city if you serve a local market.
  • Language and country availability. AI Mode is available in a list of countries, territories and languages that Google publishes and updates. Record the interface language.
  • Device. Google's help page describes AI Mode in the Google app and on the web. The layout differs, so record which you used.
  • Model, when a menu exists. Google's help page describes a model menu in the "Ask anything" bar for signed-in users who meet Google's eligibility conditions, with a Fast model and a Gemini 3 Pro option. If your account shows that menu, record which model answered.
  • A fresh conversation per question. AI Mode is conversational, and Google's Search Console documentation treats a follow-up question as a new query. Start a new conversation for every question so earlier turns cannot shape the answer.
  • Search Labs. Google describes the AI Mode experiment in Search Labs as early access to experimental capabilities. Leave it off during measurement runs, record the state, and never mix Labs rows with non-Labs rows.
  • Date and time. Record both. Answers drift, and the date is the boundary of what a row can vouch for.

Every one of these is a plain-text field in the template below. None of them is optional, because a row without run conditions cannot be compared with next month's row.

Step 3: Capture the answer, the links and the competitors

For each question, save three things before you classify anything: the full answer text, a screenshot of the whole response including the source panel, and the list of source links in the order displayed. A summary is not a record. If the response contains a set of web links but no written answer, which Google's help page says can happen when confidence is not high enough, save that too and mark the row as links only.

Then classify:

  1. Brand named: yes or no. A misspelling that clearly refers to you counts as yes, with a note.
  2. Website cited: yes or no, plus the exact URL that appeared.
  3. Source links: the count and the list. Count links to any site, including your own.
  4. Explicit recommendation: yes only when the answer tells the reader to choose you or calls you the best fit for the stated need.
  5. Framing: one of recommended, listed, compared, cautioned, absent.
  6. Competitors named: every rival brand, in the order they appear.
  7. List position: if the answer is a list, your position in it; blank otherwise.

Framing deserves one warning. Record what the answer said, not why you think it said it. An answer that describes a competitor as "a common choice for small teams" tells you what was displayed; it does not tell you what Google's system weighs, and the record should not pretend otherwise.

The manual template

The sheet below is deliberately narrow. It captures the run conditions and the seven classifications and nothing else. For twelve questions run twice a month, the work is repetitive but bounded once the routine is set.

Column What to record
Question ID and text Version number and exact wording, frozen
Run Date, time, country, interface language
Session Signed out, or account name with personalization state
Device and model Google app or web; model menu choice if shown
Surface AI Mode; never mix rows from AI Overviews into this sheet
Response type Written answer, or links only
Full answer Complete text pasted, plus the screenshot file name
Brand named Yes or no
Website cited Yes or no, plus the exact URL
Source links Count, then every link in order
Explicit recommendation Yes only when the answer clearly recommends you
Framing Recommended, listed, compared, cautioned, absent
Competitors named Every rival brand, in order
List position Your position if the answer is a list; blank otherwise
Notes Anything odd: follow-up suggestions, refusals, disclaimers

Two rules keep the sheet honest. Never overwrite a row; a new month adds rows. And compute rates against usable answers, not against questions asked, using the requested, returned, usable and missing vocabulary that Prime's metrics page uses for its own reports. The working definition of usable here, a written on-topic answer, is a convention for this sheet, not a metric label from that page.

requested = questions x runs
returned  = responses received
usable    = written on-topic
missing   = requested - returned

Brand named rate
  = answers naming the brand
  / usable

Website cited rate
  = answers linking your site
  / usable

Recommendation rate
  = answers recommending you
  / usable

A worked example with a fictional brand. Marrowbank, a payroll app, runs twelve questions twice in the last week of the month, signed out, from the United States, on the web: 24 requested. All 24 came back, so 0 missing, but two responses were links only, so 22 usable. Marrowbank is named in 8 answers, linked in 4, and explicitly recommended in 2. Brand named rate is 8/22, or 36 percent; Website cited rate is 4/22, or 18 percent; Recommendation rate is 2/22, or 9 percent. Rival A appears in 15 answers and Rival B in 10. With 22 usable answers, one answer moves any rate by about 4.5 points, so a move from 36 to 41 percent next month is one answer, not a trend.

To turn those competitor counts into a share, the AI search share of voice measurement guide sets out the two formulas that circulate under one name, and why the denominator must be stated.

Step 4: Report change over time without overclaiming

A comparable change needs the same questions, the same run conditions and the same classification rules on both dates. If any of the three moved, say so in the report and do not put the two months on one chart. Three further habits help:

  • Run the set twice per period. Two runs in the same week give you two observations under the same conditions, so you can see how much answers differ between runs before you read anything into a monthly move.
  • Report counts beside rates. "Named in 8 of 22 usable answers" is honest at this sample size; "36 percent visibility" invites false precision.
  • Wait for a pattern. Our editorial rule of thumb, not a statistical law, is to review after three months of rows before a movement gets a sentence in a report, and even then the sentence describes what changed, not what caused it.

Search Console cannot replace this record, and Google's documentation explains why. Clicks, impressions and position from AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type, not broken out on their own, so you cannot separate AI Mode from ordinary results there. Search Console also does not tell you whether an answer named your brand without linking you. What it can do is confirm, in aggregate, whether Google-surfaced links to your pages are earning clicks. Keep both records and read them side by side; our guide to a hybrid SEO and AI strategy shows how to keep the two scorecards separate without running two teams.

When a month does show a comparable gap, the sheet cannot tell you why, and this page does not guess. The useful next step is a review of the pages that could support those questions: whether they exist, whether they are indexed, and whether they say plainly what you would want an answer to repeat. Google's guidance for site owners states that a page is eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode when it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Our step-by-step guide to running an AI visibility audit end to end turns a gap in the sheet into a list of pages to review.

A checklist for evaluating an AI Mode tracking tool

When the sheet becomes too slow, you will look at software to track AI Mode brand visibility for you. Judge any candidate against the record you already keep. A tool that cannot reproduce your own columns is selling a score you cannot check.

  1. Names Google AI Mode explicitly in current documentation, separately from AI Overviews and separately from "AI search" as a catch-all.
  2. Lets you own the question set: your wording, frozen, versioned, exportable.
  3. Keeps the full answer text for every run, not a summary or a highlight.
  4. Keeps a dated screenshot of the response, including the source panel.
  5. Records citations at the URL level, with order, so Website cited and Source links can be checked by a person.
  6. Discloses run conditions: country, language, signed-in state, device, and whether each question ran in a fresh conversation.
  7. Separates the six observations above rather than folding mentions, links and recommendations into one visibility number.
  8. Reports requested, returned, usable and missing so a small sample cannot hide inside a percentage.
  9. States how it collects AI Mode answers and whether that method is one Google permits. A vendor that will not describe the method is asking you to trust a number you cannot inspect.
  10. Exports everything, so the record survives the subscription.

On 24 September 2026, the Web results in our capture for this query were led by product pages rather than guides. SE Ranking's AI Mode tracker page described tracking brand mentions and links in AI Mode answers, filtering by country and language, and stated that the tool was developed to account for volatility and user-level personalization. Knowatoa's AI Mode brand monitoring page described mention, sentiment, position and competitor tracking with multi-language support. Neither page we read stated whether checks run signed in or on which device, which is exactly what item 6 asks you to verify in a trial. This is a reading of public pages on that date, not a test and not a ranking.

The larger question of why a position tracker and an answer tracker measure different things is covered in our comparison of what an AI visibility tool and an SEO rank tracker each measure.

Where Prime AI Visibility fits, and where it does not

Disclosure: Prime AI Visibility publishes this page. Prime does not track Google AI Mode, and this article does not claim otherwise. Its live product pages list five surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, which Prime describes as not a capture or exact reproduction of the live Google Search AI Overview panel. That preview is not AI Mode either, and no Prime plan includes AI Mode.

What Prime can do with the question set on this page is run it on those five surfaces on a schedule, keep the returned answers, and report requested, returned, usable and missing with Brand named, Website cited, Source links and Explicit recommendation counted separately, which is the same accounting as the sheet above. The free Flash plan covers up to 5 questions in one completed monthly check on ChatGPT only, with no payment card. The Google AI Overview-style preview is available from the Starter plan, and one question on it uses 2 credits. Current plans and credit costs are on the pricing page. Prime's observations are API-based and can differ from what a person sees in a browser, which is one more reason the AI Mode sheet stays a manual, browser-based record for now.

Methodology and sources

This page was authored by Bob Generale; the measurement and product claims were reviewed by Alex Mannine. Research was completed on 24 September 2026. We read the Google Web results for the query in a signed-out English-language session set to the United States (the AI Overview slot was present but did not finish rendering in our capture, People Also Ask was not captured, and positions vary by location and personalization), and ran the query through Gemini 2.5 Flash with Google Search grounding, an API-based check that is not the consumer app; that answer treated "AI mode" as AI tools in general, which is why this page defines the surface before the method. Facts about AI Mode, AI Overviews, personalization, location and Search Console reporting come from Google's help and Search Central pages as published on that date. Facts about Prime come from its live product pages on that date. We did not trial any vendor product, and the checklist rates what a tool must show you rather than any named tool. Features, availability and settings change; the dates above are the boundary of what this page can vouch for.

Next steps

  1. Compare AI Mode trackers on evidence and fit once two months of the sheet have shown you which questions matter.
  2. Read Prime's metric definitions so your columns and any future tool report count the same things.
  3. When you are ready, create a Prime AI Visibility workspace with the same questions for the engines Prime covers; Flash checks ChatGPT free, and AI Mode stays in your sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a rank to track in Google AI Mode?

No. AI Mode returns a written answer with links, or sometimes a set of links on its own, not a numbered list of sites, so there is no position to record for a brand. To track AI Mode brand visibility, record a set of observations per answer instead: whether your brand is named, whether your site is linked, which sources appear, how you are framed, and which competitors appear. If the answer happens to contain a list, your place in that list is worth a column, but it is not a rank in the search sense.

How is tracking AI Mode different from tracking AI Overviews?

They are different surfaces. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so their responses and links vary. AI Overviews appear at the top of some ordinary results pages; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab. Keep separate rows or sheets for each, label the surface on every row, and never put the two on one chart.

Can Search Console show my AI Mode visibility?

Only partly. Google's documentation states that clicks, impressions and position from AI Mode are included in the Performance report's Web search type rather than broken out, that a follow-up question counts as a new query, and that Search Labs experiments are excluded. Search Console can confirm that Google-surfaced links to your pages earn clicks in aggregate; it cannot tell you whether an AI Mode answer named your brand.

How many questions and how often?

Ten to twenty frozen questions, run twice in the same week, once a month, is enough to start. Two runs give you two observations under the same conditions, so you can see how much answers differ between runs. Report counts beside rates, treat the first month as a baseline rather than a verdict, and use three months of rows as a suggested review point before a movement gets a sentence in a report.

Does Prime AI Visibility track Google AI Mode?

No. Prime publishes this page and does not track Google AI Mode on any plan. Its Google option is an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, which Prime describes as not a capture of the live AI Overview panel. Prime covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini alongside that preview; the free Flash plan checks ChatGPT only.

What is the best tool to track brand visibility in AI Mode?

No reproducible method supports naming one product as best, and this page does not. Judge any candidate against the ten-point checklist above: explicit AI Mode coverage in current documentation, your own frozen questions, full answers and dated screenshots kept, URL-level citations, disclosed run conditions, separate counts for mentions, links and recommendations, requested and usable totals, a stated collection method, and full export.

Keep the AI Mode sheet, automate the rest

Your AI Mode record stays manual for now. For the other engines, Prime AI Visibility runs the same frozen questions on a monthly schedule and keeps the answers side by side. Flash is free for ChatGPT with no card; the Google AI Overview-style preview starts on Starter, and AI Mode is not included on any plan.
