What Does AEO Mean? Answer Engine Optimization Explained, and How It Differs From SEO and GEO

What does AEO mean? AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of making your content easy for answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI features, to find, understand and use in the answers they give. It is not a separate technology or a standard. It is a label for a goal, and no regulator, search engine or standards body defines it. Google's own guidance treats the label as an alias for work that is still SEO. This page explains the term, sorts it from its neighbours, and gives a short test for any AEO claim.
This guide rests on Google's published guidance on generative AI search, Google's AI features documentation and OpenAI's crawler documentation, as they read on October 17, 2026. Opinion is labelled as such. Prime AI Visibility publishes this site and sells a product in this area.
What does AEO mean, in one paragraph?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of shaping pages, facts and third-party coverage so that systems which write an answer, instead of listing ten links, are able to retrieve your material and represent it correctly. An "answer engine" is any product that takes a question and returns a written response, often with source links. The word "optimization" covers the whole job: crawl access, clear pages, accurate facts and measured follow-up.
Three points keep the term honest.
- AEO is a goal, not a switch. No setting makes an assistant name you. Engines do not publish how they choose which sources to cite.
- Usage varies. Some writers use AEO for answer boxes and voice assistants, others for chat assistants and AI search. Check which meaning a vendor intends.
- Measurement is separate from optimization. Doing the work and checking the result are different jobs, and a tool that checks results does not do the work.
What Google says AEO means
Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI search addresses the terms directly. It says "AEO" stands for answer engine optimization and "GEO" for generative engine optimization, that both are terms you may see used for work aimed at visibility in AI search experiences, and that from Google Search's perspective optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and so is still SEO. It explains that Google's generative AI features rely on techniques such as retrieval-augmented generation, which retrieves pages through the core ranking systems, and query fan-out, where the model issues several related searches.
Two details from the same guidance matter for planning:
- A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google lists no additional technical requirements.
- Google's "mythbusting" section says you do not need llms.txt files, special markup, content chunking, rewrites written only for AI systems, inauthentic mentions or special structured data to appear in Google Search, including its generative AI features.
This applies to Google. Other engines run their own crawlers and retrieval, so the same claim cannot be assumed for them. See our note on what llms.txt does and does not control.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO: how the terms relate
| Term | Short meaning | Main surface |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Ranked result lists |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Written answers |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | Generated AI answers |
In practice, AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and in our judgement the difference is mostly vocabulary. Our guide to generative engine optimization covers the GEO label in detail and uses the same site-owner tasks. The practical question is not which acronym to pick but which job you are buying or doing. That is the point of the next section.
The five jobs hidden behind AEO
Most claims about AEO are really about one of five jobs. Naming the job exposes what a service or tool does.
| Job | What it means | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Make pages findable | Crawl access, indexing, clean pages | Reachable pages |
| Make facts clear | Accurate, dated, consistent facts | Quotable pages |
| Earn coverage | Press, reviews | Outside sources |
| Measure answers | Run fixed questions, save answers | Saved answers |
| Measure traffic | Referral and conversion analytics | Visits, leads |
A single vendor rarely does all five. In our judgement, the first mistake in buying AEO is expecting a monitoring product to do the first three, or expecting a services firm to do the fourth for you. Our guide to agent analytics for AI optimization covers the fifth job's server side.
A five-question test for any AEO claim
This is our own protocol. Use it on a proposal, a pitch or an article that says "AEO" and see how much is left.
- Which job is this? Name one of the five above. If the answer is "all of them", ask for the split.
- Which engines? A claim about "AI" should name the engines. A claim that holds for Google may not hold for ChatGPT.
- What is the evidence? A saved answer with the question, engine and date is evidence. A score without the answer is a number you cannot check.
- What is promised? No one can promise a citation or a recommendation, because engines do not publish their selection rules.
- What would you do next month? If the work cannot be repeated with the same questions, you cannot tell whether it changed anything.
Score each answer as pass or fail. A claim that passes four or five is specific enough to evaluate; two or fewer is vocabulary.
What an AEO programme looks like in practice
A plain version has four steps, and none needs a special label.
- Check access. Confirm your pages are indexed and the search crawlers you care about can reach them. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, separate from GPTBot, which it documents for model training. Our guide to AI crawlers covers who to allow.
- Write for the buyer's question. Put the answer first, state facts plainly and date them. Google's guidance asks for content with a unique point of view, not a summary of what already exists.
- Fix what outside sources say. Assistants draw on directories, reviews and press as well as your pages. Keep facts consistent across them.
- Measure with a frozen question set. Run the same buyer questions on a schedule and save every answer. Our AI visibility audit turns the saved answers into a ranked fix list, and an AI visibility strategy sets the order of work.
A worked example of the test
Take an invented pitch that says, "Our AEO programme makes sure ChatGPT recommends you." Apply the five questions. Job: unclear, since a programme can be pages, coverage or measurement. Engines: one is named, ChatGPT. Evidence: none offered. Promise: a recommendation, which no one can guarantee. Repeatability: not stated. That scores one pass out of five, for naming an engine.
Now take a second pitch: "We will fix your service pages and local listings, then run 25 fixed buyer questions on ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity each month and send you the saved answers." Job: pages and coverage, plus measurement. Engines: three, named. Evidence: saved answers. Promise: work and records, not a result. Repeatability: the same questions every month. That scores five out of five. The second pitch is not better because it uses a better acronym. It is better because each part can be checked, and you can see next month whether anything moved.
Mention, citation, recommendation, referral and conversion
AEO results come in five forms that should never share one number.
- Mention. An answer names your brand.
- Citation. An answer links to a page you own.
- Recommendation. An answer puts you forward for the buyer's need.
- Referral. A visitor arrives from an AI tool, read in your analytics.
- Conversion. The visit becomes a lead or sale, read in your CRM.
A monitoring product covers the first three from saved answers. Google's Generative AI performance report in Search Console covers Google's own features, and it is a separate source. The metrics page defines each measure used on this site, and our overview of AI search visibility explains how they fit together.
Common misreadings of AEO
- "AEO replaces SEO." Google says its AI features rest on core search systems, so SEO fundamentals still apply to them.
- "There is a secret format." Google's guidance lists chunking, special markup and AI-only rewrites as unnecessary for its own search.
- "A score tells me my AEO." A score without the underlying answer cannot be checked, and answers vary between runs.
- "More mentions anywhere help." Google's guidance says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems.
- "A checker fixes it." A checker shows results. The fixing is work on pages and sources.
Where Prime AI fits, and where it does not
Affiliation: Prime AI Visibility is our own product, and it sits in the fourth job above. You write the buyer questions, each check runs across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, and every answer is saved with the names mentioned and the links shown. The features page lists the rest. Flash is free: five questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, up to 15 answers a month, no card. Starter at $69 a month covers all five.
Limitations: Prime AI Visibility does not do the first three jobs: it does not fix pages, publish content or earn coverage. It does not record crawler visits, traffic or conversions, and it does not report sentiment or rank or grade whether a fact is correct. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI or Google AI Mode. Checks run monthly by default, with weekly, temporary daily and on-demand checks on paid plans. PyraBuilds' Prime AI agent profile describes the product in Pyra's agent catalogue. For checking tools, see our guide to evaluating an AEO check.
When the next job is implementation
If the gap is in pages, outside coverage or both, the work is implementation. Percepture, founded in 2004 and Inc. 5000-recognized, offers generative engine optimization services that combine search, answer-engine and earned-media work. Fit: a company that wants jobs one to three planned together. Limitation: Percepture is a services firm, not a monitoring product, so it pairs with one. Prime AI Visibility has a commercial relationship with Percepture.
Teams with a steady content workload can also look at Pyra's AI agents for marketing and sales, which include human-approved content operations agents. Pyra's anonymised AI visibility case study is a published client result in another industry, not a benchmark. Pyra is also commercially connected to Prime AI Visibility.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO mean?
AEO means answer engine optimization: making your content easy for answer engines to find, understand and use when they write answers to questions.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims at ranked result lists. AEO aims at written answers. Google's guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, so the work overlaps.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Largely. Both labels describe visibility in AI answers, and Google's guide names them together. Which one a vendor uses is mostly a matter of vocabulary.
Can anyone guarantee an AI will cite my site?
No. Engines do not publish how they choose sources, so any guarantee is unsupported.
Do I need llms.txt for AEO?
Google says it does not use llms.txt for Google Search. Other engines document their own behavior, so check each one.
How do I measure AEO?
Run a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule, save each answer with the links shown, and read mentions, citations and recommendations separately from referral traffic and conversions.
