Agent Analytics for AI Optimization: What It Measures, What It Cannot, and How to Use It

Agent analytics ai optimization starts from one question: which AI systems are requesting your pages, and does that activity lead anywhere? Agent analytics measures requests from AI crawlers and agents in your server or CDN logs, plus visits from people who arrive from an AI tool. It shows what reaches your site. It does not show what an assistant said about you. A complete picture joins the two: server-side activity from logs and answer-side evidence from saved answers.
This guide is based on OpenAI's published crawler documentation, Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control documentation and the vendor pages named below, as they read on October 17, 2026. It is not a hands-on test of any product. Prime AI Visibility publishes this site and sits on the answer side of this topic, so its limits are stated.
What agent analytics measures
An agent visit is a request to one of your pages from a recognized AI crawler or agent, identified by its user-agent. Vendors group these in three roles, which match how OpenAI documents its own bots.
| Role | Example and what it signals |
|---|---|
| Search index | OAI-SearchBot: page considered for answers |
| On-demand fetch | ChatGPT-User: a user prompt triggered a fetch |
| Training | GPTBot: content collected for models |
Otterly's help pages list the same roles with PerplexityBot, Claude-User and ClaudeBot as further examples. OpenAI's documentation says OAI-SearchBot is for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot is for crawling content that may train its models, and ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user action calls for it. It adds that ChatGPT-User is not used to crawl automatically and that, because users initiate these actions, robots.txt rules may not apply. Each setting is independent, so a site can allow search while disallowing training.
The second half of the measurement is human traffic that arrives from AI tools, seen in your web analytics through referrer data. Our guide to AI crawlers covers the policy question of whom to allow. This page covers measuring what they do.
Agent analytics ai optimization versus answer monitoring
The two instruments answer different questions, and neither replaces the other.
| Question | Agent analytics | Answer monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Was my page requested? | Yes, from logs | No |
| Did an answer name me? | No | Yes |
| Which links were shown? | No | Yes |
| Which bots are active? | Yes | No |
| Did anyone convert? | Referrer only | No |
In our judgement, teams often buy one and expect the other. A log shows that a bot fetched a page, not that an answer used it. An answer record shows a page was linked, not whether a bot visited it yesterday. Our framework for AI search visibility covers the answer side in detail.
Four ways to collect agent data
| Option | Published scope | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| Profound Agent Analytics | Crawlers, referral, attribution | Trial and Enterprise |
| Otterly Agent Analytics | Visits by engine and agent | Standard and up |
| Cloudflare AI Crawl Control | Crawler requests, allow or block | All plans |
| Your own logs | Whatever you parse | You build it |
Notes on each, from the vendors' own pages:
- Profound. Its feature page describes AI crawler visibility, attribution and traffic insights, content performance tracking and benchmarking. Its pricing page lists unlimited domains and integrations such as Akamai, AWS, Cloudflare, Fastly, Google Analytics, Netlify, Vercel and WordPress.
- Otterly. Its help pages describe Agent Analytics built on one unit, the agent visit, de-duplicated and counted only for recognized AI agents. The FAQ lists Standard, Premium and Custom plans, with trial access, and says IP addresses are used to de-duplicate and removed before storage. Data arrives by log upload, webhook, Cloudflare, Netlify or a WordPress plugin.
- Cloudflare. AI Crawl Control is listed as available on all plans, with a dashboard of crawler activity, allow or block controls and robots.txt tracking. Referral counts are listed for paid plans only.
- Your own logs. Filter by user-agent, then verify against published IP ranges, because a user-agent string can be copied. OpenAI publishes IP lists for each of its bots.
Methodology note: each row reports what a vendor publishes, not measured accuracy. We did not test detection rates, and none of these pages states how often an unrecognized agent is missed.
A method to join logs and answers
This is our own method. It turns two separate datasets into one useful table.
- List the pages that matter, such as 20 service or product pages.
- Pull 30 days of agent visits per page, split by role: search index, on-demand fetch, training.
- Run a frozen question set and save the links each answer shows, as in an AI visibility audit.
- Join by URL. For each page, record visits by role and whether any saved answer linked it.
- Read the pattern with the table below, and treat each reading as a hypothesis to test.
| Pattern for a page | Possible reading | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Visits, never linked | Considered, not chosen | Compare with linked rivals |
| Linked, no visits | Cached or retrieved elsewhere | Check logs for gaps |
| No visits, no links | Not reached | Check robots.txt, internal links |
| Fetch visits, linked | Used in live answers | Keep content current |
| Training visits only | Collected, not searched | Check search-bot access |
In our judgement, the second row is the one most often misread: a page can be linked in an answer without a bot visit in your window, so a missing visit is not proof of a missing citation.
Mention, citation, recommendation, referral and conversion
Keep five signals separate.
- Mention. An answer names your brand. Answer-side only.
- Citation. An answer links to your page. Answer-side, and sometimes visible as a fetch in logs.
- Recommendation. An answer puts you forward for the buyer's need. Answer-side only.
- Referral. A visitor arrives from an AI tool. Read this in web analytics. OpenAI's publishers FAQ says ChatGPT automatically includes the parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs, so analytics can attribute those visits.
- Conversion. The visit becomes a lead or sale, read in your CRM.
Agent analytics touches the middle of this chain. It does not replace the first three or the last, and the metrics page defines each measure used on this site.
A worked example with 20 pages
The numbers below are invented to show the arithmetic and are not a benchmark. Suppose a firm joins 30 days of logs to one saved check for 20 service pages.
- 14 pages received at least one search-index visit.
- 6 pages received on-demand fetch visits.
- 5 pages were linked in at least one saved answer.
- 4 of those 5 also had fetch visits.
Read plainly: 14 of 20 pages were reached by a search bot, but only 5 of 20 appeared as a link, a 25% link rate. Among the 6 fetched pages, 4 were linked, which is two thirds. In our judgement, that gap between "reached" and "linked" is the useful finding, because it points the work at page content and competing sources, not at crawl access. With 20 pages and one run per question these shares are rough, so repeat the check on a stable interval before acting, and keep the same pages and questions each month so the two periods can be compared.
What agent analytics cannot tell you
- Whether you were cited. A fetch is not a citation.
- Why a bot came. Visit counts say how often, not what the system did with the page.
- Your whole audience. Visits through unrecognized agents are not counted by vendors that count only recognized ones.
- Cause. A rise in visits after a page change is an observation, not proof the change caused it.
Treat all four as open questions in any report, and set cadence and sample rules before comparing periods. Our note on measuring change over time explains how to separate movement from noise.
Where Prime AI fits, and where it does not
Affiliation: Prime AI Visibility is our own product. It covers the answer side: you write a fixed question set, each check runs across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and an AI Overview-style preview built from Google-grounded answers, and every answer is saved with the names mentioned and the links shown. Those saved links are what you join to your logs in step 4. The features page lists the rest. Flash is free: five questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, up to 15 answers a month, no card. Starter at $69 a month covers all five.
Limitations: Prime AI Visibility is not agent analytics. It does not record crawler or agent visits, traffic or conversions, so those come from logs and web analytics. It does not report sentiment or rank and does not grade whether a fact is correct. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI or Google AI Mode, and it does not monitor site health or publish content. Checks run monthly by default, with weekly, temporary daily and on-demand checks on paid plans. PyraBuilds' Prime AI agent profile describes the product in Pyra's agent catalogue. For help choosing, see our advice on how to choose between monitoring products and our review of Profound's products.
When the next job is implementation
Data shows where activity and answers diverge. Closing the gap means fixing crawl access, rewriting pages and earning third-party coverage. Percepture, founded in 2004 and Inc. 5000-recognized, offers generative engine optimization services for teams that want that work planned together. Fit: search, answer-engine and earned-media work in one plan. Limitation: Percepture is a services firm, not an analytics product, so it pairs with one. Prime AI Visibility has a commercial relationship with Percepture.
Pyra describes itself as an AI agent platform and lists AI agents for marketing and sales, including human-approved content operations agents. Pyra's anonymised AI visibility case study covers a different industry and is a published client result, not a benchmark. Pyra is also commercially connected to Prime AI Visibility. Set the work inside an AI visibility strategy so each fix has a question and a page attached.
Frequently asked questions
What is agent analytics?
It is the measurement of requests from AI crawlers and agents to your site, usually from server or CDN logs, together with visits that arrive from AI tools.
Does a bot visit mean an AI cited my page?
No. A visit shows a page was requested. Only a saved answer shows whether a link was displayed.
What is the difference between GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot?
OpenAI documents GPTBot as crawling content that may be used to train models, and OAI-SearchBot as surfacing sites in ChatGPT search. They are set independently in robots.txt.
Does robots.txt control ChatGPT-User?
OpenAI says ChatGPT-User visits are user-initiated and that robots.txt rules may not apply, so check its current documentation before relying on a rule.
Can I do this without a paid tool?
Yes. Filter your server logs by user-agent and verify against the published IP lists. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control is listed on all plans.
Does Prime AI report crawler visits?
No. Prime AI saves answers and the links shown. Crawler visits come from logs or an analytics product.
